I finished it last night! In a few weeks I'll probably go back and read it a little more slowly. Lance and Jade are very similar to Brangelina! I was glad to see that Lance and Jade didn't have the perfect relationship the world seemed to think they had and that Georgie finally saw Lance for the "tofu" that he was! Paul suprised me, at first I thought he was going to turn out to be a bad guy and instead he changed and wanted a good relationship with Georgie. It was so sweet when they finally worked things out. I loved Bram, of course! The banter between Georgie and Bram was so funny. Ahhhh, what a good book! I totally loved it! Meghann in Des Plaines, IL |

yep I need to read it again more slowly next week. I have a grad school application due this Sunday, but I knew I would be constantly distracted by this book. So I decided to buy it on the first day to get it out of my system asap. =) haha! It took me awhile to fall for Bram because you could never tell when he was telling the truth, but I did love their banter. - Erin http://flickr.com/erink02 *changed it to my flickr, since it gets updated more frequently than the blog, hah.* |

I'm a slow processor,so I'll probably have more to say later, but I loved Bram. I've never had a favorite SEP hero, but I might now. Yeah, he lied to Georgie, but nothing like he lied to himself. He's one of those people who, for whatever reason, gets stuck in their adolescent self image. Despite all his accomplishements, kicking two addictions, getting an education, turning around his finances, he couldn't really believe he was a worthwhile person. His plan for his behavior always came from what that seventeen year old drunk would have done: from manipulating prolonging the marriage, the $100 ebay ring, the syncophant with Rory, all the way to faking a love declaration to Georgie. But his actual behavior truly reflected who he was. He said Chaz was a "mistake." The ring was worth taking the plumbing apart, he pulled no punches when he finally got to talk to Rory one-on-one. Most of all, he immediately and barely in time realized his self-delusion with his feelings for Georgie. He is a person where actions absolutely speak louder than words. It was a delight to watch that fact slowly dawn on Georgie. The 109th episode of Skip/Scooter was hilarious. I loved, loved that Paul took part in it. Patricia G |

Just finished. (Sigh) I love a happy ending. Now, I have lived and worked in most of these places that SEP described. I've got to provide pictures for y'all. It's my civic duty. This is The Ivy on Robertson Blvd. - SEP did a great job on this one.
This is a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. As you can see the homes are built right up to the road and share a strip of coastline. There are some communities which are private like the Malibu Colony, but the beaches are public property. Thus the Paparazzi are able to comb the beaches for their prey.
The Paparazzi or Jackals as SEP calls them, are sometimes called Stalkerazzi's by the locals. They are ruthless. But the Malibu community is literally fighting back, especially on the beaches. The locals will swarm them now and threaten them. It gets crazy.
I'll post more pictures later. Hilary "You had me at hello." - Jerry Maguire |

He almost cleared ahead of Dan Calebow (who I see as Howie Long), in my hero worship. Bram's let people think what they wanted of him, becuase he felt he deserved it. While he nade himself a better man/person,he did not accept this for himself until he had a real sustaining love. Bravo! |

>soooo, did anybody else see a rather striking reference to >"brangelina"? Yes...And no. On the surface, yeah, but I didn't feel that underlying thread of atonement behavior in Jade. As for Brad, Lance seemed too vapid. Neither Jade nor Lance had an ounce of redeeming qualities, but the real world is rarely that tidy. Of course, that's why it's called fiction. I didn't want to understand or empathize with these characters. I wanted to loathe them. Karen - mountain highlands of Western MD |

I want to know what happens to Chaz and Aaron. She needs a dog to nurture (not a yappy hair bow wearing type)...maybe she could cater canine birthday parties, weddings, showers, etc.). |

There are so many wonderful, funny, poignant quotables in this book, but my favorite has to be this one: pg 148. "It was pathetic, but understandable. She was even a little proud of herself. Despite the current chaos stirred up by the photos, she was experiencing lust at its most elemental, separate from even a minimal amount of affection. Basically, she'd turned into a guy." I made DH read the sex shop scene since I couldn't stop laughing. The things I learn from reading SEP, really! The interaction of Georgie and Chaz was compelling especially the use of the video camera in developing their relationship. Well done, Susan! Lizzie in Denver |

p. 117 "...Sex Tek: The Next Penetration..."If you've ever dated a trekkie, you'd so understand. Well, I didn't actually date him. If we'd dated, I would've treated him worse and he would've been history within 2mths. --- p. 122 & throughout Ch9 the Nirvana t-shirt references One of those details that totally nails a character. Priceless. Plus, I'm a fan. LOL. --- p. 123 & thereafter "...I bought it for a hundred bucks on eBay..." re the ring Oh my. Although I must admit, I found Georgie to be incredibly obtuse about this whole thread. There's such a thing as being in denial, but...We're talking fine jewelry here. One of my few girlie passions. Sure, I would've shied from a vulgar 3 carats, too, (I've got an emerald-cut ruby tucked in my jewelry box that I'll never in a million yrs wear), but this is Hollywood. Have your diamond orgasm already and be done with it. --- p. 158 "...Meg pulled back far enough to spot the blender with its messy, unprocessed pink contents. 'If that has alcohol in it, I want some.' 'It's ten o'clock in the morning.' 'Not in Punjab...'" I can so relate. --- p. 255 Richard Gere vs Ed Nortin in Primal Fear Ed Norton was *brilliant* in that movie. You bet he stole it. Too bad he's such a train wreck IRL...Or has he sobered up yet? Regardless, the Gere banter is vintage SEP. Simply fabulous. --- p. 314 "...She was something far more interesting than a Botoxed, lipo-sucked, trout-mouthed, silicon-enhanced California Frankenbeauty." Sing it to me, sister! I *will* preach on.
--- The Aaron/Chaz subplot resolution made me feel horribly guilty about my old trekkie bud, but sorry to say, some stories don't have a happy ending. We would've tore each other apart. Here's hoping after the last wife that he's finally figured that out, too. The Paul/Laura subplot...Oh, be still my heart, that was WONDERFUL. In short - SEP, you're a genius. In spite of the set-up, this wasn't really along the lines of your more campy bks (though it certainly had its moments), but I *loved* that. WID4L was richly layered, hooked me by the heartstrings...A stellar, emotionally satisfying read. NOW, I can go back to my vamps. Major attack of the squirrelies lately, but this settled me right down. What can I say? You're a goddess. Karen - mountain highlands of Western MD |

To begin: I started reading the book at 8pm last night and finished at 4am this morning...straight through, I couldn't put it down. There are so many good things to say about this book, and so many that I've already read from this discussion board. I wish I had the book in front of me now, but alas I don't, so my favorite quotes will have to wait for another time. I loved the banter between Bram and Georgie. The tension was just right and you knew they would fall in love. I (obviously) did notice the Brangelina comparison, but as I thought about it, there are many other Hollywood romances that are broken up in the very same ways. (Jude Law/Sienna Miller comes to mind). I was also intrigued by the two sub-romances: Chaz and Andrew, and Paul and Laura. In the back of my mind I knew the couples would eventually get together. It's always good to hear from April and Jack too! I'm glad that Blue gave them a grandchild...kinda wish I knew what they named it. Bravo!

I just finished this book. And it striked me. I was never a big fan of Jennifer Aniston. But I do feel for her. Though she had some boxoffice hits after divorce, she was never considered "officially get over it". Though she might have done something else, most of the news I read about her is about her relationships or lack of relationship. It's sad. She should not have been evaluated by that. I am glad that, through Georgie, you described the life that I secretely been hoping she would get. I couldn't help but think this is so SEP. Such warm-hearted touch, which is why I adore your books. I especially love Chaz. When Aaron really dated Becky I got all nervous up! Screaming in my head saying "Aaron, can't you see she's the one for you?" I wish to see more about Rory. She's a mystery that deserves her own story. As I finished these two books of this month, I couldn't help but feel depressed. It'll need probably for another two years for your next book. As much as I would love to reread this book, please don't keep us waiting. P.S. will Hot Shot in the eReader form soon as well? |

loved it ! it was awesome. Great banter between Bram and Georgie and great flawed characters and relationships. Just loved it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around Bram what an interesting guy. He wasn't as easy to love as say Heath or Dean, in that he reminded me of SugarBeth. Loved him though. Chaz was fabulous ! Great book SEP !! Thank you ! Jeanna Southern New Mexico |

Just picked up one of the 3 books left at B&N...enjoying every word of it so far and my first big laugh was on page 45 As she let her hands drop, a horrifying image greeted her in the mirror, like early Courtney Love. A witch's brew of tangled cherry-cola hair didn't hide the beard burn on her neck. Blotches of old mascara smudged her green eyes LIKE MUD AROUND AN ALGAE POND. Too funny! Vickie |

Just finished. I loved it! Loved the primary characters and the secondary romances. I was really glad that Paul didn't turn out to be a controlling father - just one that didn't know how to show he loved his daughter. And Bram was great - I liked how little bits of his character kept coming out, as it became clear he had reformed from the selfish person he'd been. I also felt like his background justified his early bad behavior (at least in literary terms) and that his character growth was really believable. Georgie was really likeable and I liked that she stayed that way even when learning to stand up for herself. Loved Chaz and Aaron, too. And I'm with Karen near Chicago about the 3-carat diamond. I wouldn't shy away either. I loved the scene with Bram taking the sink apart to find it, too. Carolyn in Southeastern Virginia |

>And I'm with Karen near Chicago about the 3-carat diamond. >I wouldn't shy away either. The idea of it is way more exciting than the reality. I inherited a ginormously HUGE emerald-cut ruby ring, I dunno, about 10yrs ago. It's gorgeous. Don't get me wrong. That ring fulfills every girlie avarice I have ever possessed, which is saying a lot since I'm a hound for fine jewelry. But I still can't wear it. Oh, I did a few times when it was first passed down to me, made my mother happy, but...It's vulgar & crass. I generally wear 3 other rings along with my wedding set, dainty rocks with delicate settings that my dh had the good sense to choose for me even though with the last one particularly he could afford to go a lot higher. The ruby just does NOT fit. The sizing's perfect, but it doesn't fit me, if you know what I'm saying. It doesn't fit in with my other jewelry and it definitey doesn't fit who I am. I neither want, nor need that kind of flash. Also why I limit myself to rings on 4 fingers instead of loading both hands down with sparkle. I love fine jewelry with the fire of a thousand suns, but there's such a thing as overkill. Even if it's the only ring I'm wearing, that ruby attracts way too much attention. Rings like that are more trouble than they're worth. I'll never feel comfortable wearing the blasted thing and it requires an extra rider on our insurance. Would've been much better for everyone involved if my SIL had inherited it. My brother's a doctor and the glare on her hands practically blinds you. But it passes down the line female to female so I'm stuck with it til I can foist it off on my DD. >I loved the scene with Bram >taking the sink apart to find it, too. THAT, I confess, was truly outstanding.
But the only reason that scene worked for me was because it felt like Bram was emotionally invested in the ring way more than he was financially. To me, the price tag didn't matter or the sz of the rocks. Side issues. What mattered to him was that he *could* give Georgie that caliber of flash and that he needed to give it to her -- for himself. The ring was something she took for granted, but to Bram, it meant everything. The ring represented his slow crawl up from the streets, finally reaching the summit. Of course, he lied to Georgie and told her it wasn't real. He couldn't rip himself wide open, risk her knowing how it important it was to him. But he knew. Every time his eye caught the sparkle on her finger and that was enough to satisfy him. Then again, what do I know? I could be reading too much into it. LOLOL I love your explanation for it, because I couldn't really pin down why he got her the ring in the first place. I don't think he's been harboring love for her for 10 years, but simply to one up her didn't seem like the whole story to me. She could have thrown it in the ocean during one of their paparazzi accompanied dates. So your explanation helps a lot.

I read from 4pm- 1am because I couldn't stop! I agree with so many of the comments and don't have my book to quote but I loved watching Georgie grow as a filmmaker. Just as Chaz "had" to talk TO the camera, Georgie "had" to ask the questions from behind. I loved the Paul story and how he changed (after some VERY funny misattempts!). I LOVED that he was the minister in "the Love Letter"! Speaking of which, that was just too funny! Was anyone else surprised when Bram confesed all to the paparazzi at the end? I didn't see that coming. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts later.

Civil War re-enactors would make an EXCELLENT backdrop for a bk. They're a very insular, intimate group amongst themselves, but friendly to outsiders. It's the contrast of what they do on wkends and their everyday lives that really blows you away. Monday-Friday, he may be a tax accountant or a mechanic or a complete wastrel, but Saturday morning, he's a reb lieutenant and a true gentleman of the south. Old world charm drips off him like warm honey. Plus, they have the BEST battlefield ghost stories. SEP, you absolutely HAVE to do this. You write southern characters so well & so realistically, I'm convinced nobody else could do it justice.

I left the re-enacting to my little brother. Those dresses are way, way too hot and I'm not talking whoa-that-looks-good hot, I'm talking there's-no-such-thing-as-ladylike-sweat hot. I'll leave the female re-enacting to the closet masochists. I ran around in my street clothes. LOL. I sure did like the men, though. There's just something too sexy about a guy getting so excited about minute historical detail. It'd make a fabulous bk, SEP...Hint, hint...

Finally finished it last night. SEP, what would I do without your witty dialogue? You're a genius with banter.
I don't have time to spill all my thoughts today but have to quote one of Bram's thoughts "Georgie was the weirdest combination of common sense and wacko bullshit he'd ever known, and she was starting to drive him more than a little crazy." The wacho bullshit cracked me up. Especially because Bram is the same combination. Excellent SEP! Ann in New Mexico |

57. "RE: WHAT I DID FOR LOVE-- SPOILERS & random thoughts"

Okay, so I finally have had a moment to finish reading it all the way through today and I LOVED it! Here are my random thoughts. Some random thoughtsIn so many of SEP's books the heroine is kind of mentored by a more mature secondary character and rescued by the hero. So I loved that in WIDFL Georgie sort of does the mentoring and rescuing with Chaz and Bram. I kind of pictured Georgie as a cross between Julia Roberts and Shirley Temple? I had kind of a hard time picturing Bram, other than as HOT! Love her description of Chaz to Meg. LOL! The scene in provocative was super funny and sexy!! I loved that someone who spent most of her life involuntarily in the spotlight when she wasn’t working taking to the streets with a camera herself. And I also like that she found a way to help the world in her own more sincere way by making the documentary about those people. I love Georgie’s Lance/Tofu analogy. I loved the scene after the skip and scooter party, so heartbreaking and sweet. The “Love Story” was hysterical and brilliant. Tori in South Carolina

I'm so pathetic. I want to reread to see if there is ANY definitive sign that Bram would have admitted to deeper feelings (or that he actually *had* deeper feelings) for Georgie early on, if she had opened up to HIM early on. But I'm afraid it's not there to find. And that he wanted to be her champion (no pun!) right from when they were married. I can't get passed a couple of things: When Bram said "I want you so much" when they almost had sex after they were married and back at his house. That little comment spoke volumes to me, but maybe it wasnt' supposed to. I thought "Yes! He *does* want this to be real!" And the *real* diamond ring. I was fairly certain, right when he gave it to her, that he did not buy her a fake ring. To me, it seemed like it meant that he wanted (or had hopes for) the marriage to be a *real* kind of marriage but there was no way he would admit it to himself or to Geergie bec of the way Georgie pushed him away and was so cynical and sarcastic. Maybe it's just wishful romantic thinking on my part bec so many of Bram's other actions are directly opposite from my theory... I'm in denial that he could be so selfish.
I almost felt like I was reading a mystery novel, trying to figure out the TRUE Bram Shephard! LOL. Tami in North Carolina

i finished it last night in one sitting. i didn't sleep till 4am it was a great book (can there be any other way) but I'm not so sure if its going to be one of my favorite works of SEP. Compared to the older books, it didn't have that deep of an emotional conflict, although it is understandable how Georgie was crushed by Lance's defection and Bram was well, Bram. I liked the characters, especially Chaz and Aaron. They make a cute couple. Lance and Jade, Brangelina, definitely. hahaha! I don't think Brad is as vapid as Lance is or as stupid, but he's definitely well under La Jolie's thumb like dear ole Lancelot... I'll definitely read this book again and again, until its as well worn as all of the others, and until the next one comes out... |
