"Appetizers/Finger Food?"

I'm hosting my SIL's baby shower. However, I'm looking for some different appetizers than the ones I usually make. I may stick with my broccoli salad and cheese, fruit, veggies though.

Here's the trick. It's in the middle of the afternoon so I don't need heavy foods. It'll be after lunch and before dinner.

It can't have lunch meat or soft cheeses because of the pregnant woman. The mom-to-be also doesn't eat any seafood. My mother-in-law can't have tomatoes. Technically, my mom can't have chocolate, but she's on her own. It's so hard to find summer recipes without tomato. I did find a crostini with parmesean cheese, garlic and prosciutto and then I figure I'll raid Trader Joe's unless there are suggestions. I'll also browse through the recipes here.

That's funny because my mom wanted books for my birthday and that's one I asked for.

This spinach dip is really good with bagel chips or some harder crispy crackers.

I am making this weekend for a party. Can't wait. PS - normally we don't add the optional items.

I am a food blog junkie, and always bookmark recipes. I made some of these for a big 50th birthday party last fall. Here are a couple that I think might meet your criteria:

Potato & Rosemary flatbread (no cheese, though you could sprinkle on a nice hard cheese like fontina), which you could cut into small diamond/triangle shapes:
http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Potato-Pizza

Baked Cheddar Olives, which definitely qualify as finger food:
http://hungrybruno.blogspot.com/2009/12/baked-cheddar-olives.html

Tiny tacos, which always seem to be a crowd pleaser:
http://timeinthekitchen.com/2009/03/tiny-tacos/

Cinnamon Chicken and Nut pastries, which are kind of middle eastern in style & can be made ahead of time:
http://almostbourdain.blogspot.com/2009/11/christmas-recipe-cinnamon-chicken-and.html

And Spiced, oven-roasted chickpeas:

Good luck!!!

I'm also hosting a baby shower for my SIL at the end of this month. So, I'm curious to see what is suggested. My problem is that half of the people who will be there are just plain country folk who prefer simple, old fashioned food, and the other half are more sophisticated. I prefer the sophisticated fare. That's what I'm used to. But, I don't know how to mesh the two without ending up with a huge menu.

I can relate to your dilemma, Tori. I've been called a foodie & a "Martha" by my family because I love interesting, sophisticated food, as well as good old fashioned home cooking..the common link and emphasis being on GOOD! I still hear about the time I made a cold sesame noodle salad for my daughter's baptism--- a lot of, "what the heck is that!?!" LOL

One recipe that was a huge hit that I made for the 50th birthday party was a Tyler Florence appetizer, Grilled Beef Tenderloin on Focaccia. (It's a hearty app, which is why I did not include with my recs to April) It might work for you, since it's basically an open-faced roast beef sandwich (which would, I think, appeal to the plain country folk) but with roasted cherry tomatoes, arugula, and an absolutely delicious chili mayo/sauce, it can also be classified as sophisticated. Since I do not have a beef tenderloin budget, I substituted beef tri-tip roast, or flank steak, sliced thinly against the grain, with really excellent results. It was also helpful that I was able to do the meat, tomatoes and sauce ahead of time, and then assemble the open faced sandwiches as needed.

Good luck!!

I've posted this awhile ago, but I make stuffed roma tomatoes a lot. They're simple and people always seem to like them (except my mil is allergic).

I may make something everyone can eat and then my tomatoes and crab dip which are both easy, can be made ahead of time.

I'm lucky that it's a 2PM shower so I shouldn't have to make too much food. Definitely scanning recipes here though!

Thanks, all!

oooo . . . another good one, a package of those small weenies, a package of bacon (I used maple bacon), brown sugar, and tooth picks. Wrap each weenie with 1/2 - 1/3 piece of bacon and connect with a toothpick. sprinkle with brown sugar and bake at 400 degrees until crispy. I cooked in a 9 x 13 pan, but just don't have them too close together, I think the bacon doesn't crisp as well. super tasty!

or how about simple english tea sandwiches?
brown bread with cream cheeze, sliced cucumber and a little dill
any bread or cracker with egg salad and dill pickle
wheat bread with cream cheeze and fresh red pepper pieces
cocktail rye with thin sliced red onion and thin sliced rare
tenderloin drizzled with good balsamic vinegar.

these were the favorites at my english tea party shower.

I never did post what we made. I did parmesan crostini with proscuitto, an arugala salad with pecans and balsamic dressing, and a pasta/tomato/corn salad. My mother-in-law made sandwiches - tuna, ham and roast beef, I think. And we had shrimp cocktail and obviously cake.

Everything you made sounds delicious, April. If I had been there, I'm sure I would have eaten way too much
