"WAYR: Non-romance for September 2010"

I am reading - Gerald Durrell's Corfu trilogy. The first book - My family and other animals is up for book group.

Also listening to 'Eat, pray, love' read by the author. She has a lovely husky voice but little expression. I am still in Italy so far.

Between reading about Greece and listening about exotic exploits - I am hanging out for a holiday. And not in the pages of a book either.
End of rant.

What are you reading & recommending?

Efy (Sydney)

Efy, that brought back memories. When I was in my early teens I remember reading the GD books and being thoroughly captivated.

Yesterday I finished Bowled Over by Kasey Michaels. I have thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted mystery series but had the feeling this may be the last book just by the way unresolved issues seemed to be getting wrapped up. Sure enough, I went to the author's website and saw the announcement that Bowled Over is the sixth and last book in her Maggie Kelly Mystery series. I'll miss these characters, but in a way I'm glad the author wrapped things up before I became tired of the series. Some authors just don't know when to quit.

I'll eventually be reading this for book club and should finish Hornet's Nest soon, too. I keep reading a bit and putting it aside.

Just picked "The Mapping of Love and Death" from my to be read stack. The latest in the Masie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear

Another series of books are the Tuesday Next books by Jasper Fforde. I've loaned mine out and hope they find there way back home soon!

I'm reading "The indipendence of Miss Mary Bennet" by CMC. Enjoying it so far, but I must say the author is not very nice to Mr Darcy...

I'll also reread "Water for Elephants" for our bookclub. Read it a couple of years ago and liked it very much.

I loved water for elephants, too. My book club enjoyed it.
I have CMCs book on my TBR pile - I can't wait to read it. She's one of my favourite Aussie authors. Her Thorn Birds is one of my top reads.

I just started 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel.
Set in 1520's Britain, the book is as big as a house brick. I am daunted.

I read Thorn Birds when I was a teenager, and I really loved it. In fact, I put it on my top-50-romances in my e-mail to Jewls. Hope you'll join the fun too, Efy and make a list. Well, Thorn Birds is the only CMcC-book I read before, but I know she has written many books. Are they all as good?

I've read the Roman Empire books, I can't recall the titles right now. I didn't like them very much, but I don't care for infanticide.

Malin, I would love to get updates on what you think about this book.

I never read her Rome series but I remember hearing they were well researched. I've read only some of her books, those mainly set in Australia. (The Thorn Birds, An Indecent Obsession, The Ladies of Missalonghi, Tim)
'Tim' was a sensitively written story about an older woman and a younger man. I saw the film featuring a very young Mel Gibson and Piper Laurie and then I hunted down the book.

Please update us on Mary's story.

I've finnished Mary Bennets story, and I enjoyed it. In our book-club, we grade the books from 1-7 (7 is best), and I would grade it 5. What I liked the most is the developement of the caracters from Pride and Prejudice, and especially Marys caracter. She was a rather silly girl in P and P, now she is a very likeable woman, and it make sense to me as a reader. There was also a slightly feministic touch in the book, wich I liked alot.
There were some events in the book that were a bit too much and I thought the story would have been better without them (trying hard not to give any spoilers here ). But all in all, I recommend the book.

I'm reading Water for Elephants for the first time. I didn't want to read it because the hype got too big and that usually turns me against many things, but I finally broke down and bought it years ago. So, I'm finally reading it. So far, I like it much more than I expected (which isn't saying much, but I am enjoying it).

Just finished Between a Wok and a Hard Place, another in the Pennsylvania Dutch mysteries by Tamar Myers.

Now I'm about halfway through In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents In the Line of Fire and the Presidents they Protect, by Ronald Kessler. Some fascinating glimpses into what some of the presidents and their family members are really like when the cameras are not on. Also, the author points out some serious problems with the way the secret service has been run ever since 9/11/when it became part of Homeland Security. He says it's a miracle we haven't had another assasination in recent years.

I'm listening to "Destroyermen: Into the Storm" by Taylor Anderson. From the first words, it is filled with excitement. If you like WW2 information, you might like this. The first scenes are a battle between the US and Japan right after Pearl Harbor and then when it looks like all is lost a squall appears. They end up in a different earth. So far I really like it. I'm usually not much for Sci Fi but this is different. We'll see if it stays as good as it starts. I hope so because it's a trilogy.

I just finished this trilogy and I might be the last person on earth to do so. It was SEP that got me to read these when there is no way I would have gone there otherwise.

SORT OF SPOILERS

/.
These books are full of allegory- particularly the burden of work most of the world puts into our affluent lives. What also struck me powerfully was the depth of these books. It is hard to believe they are intended for youth. Unlike most of the books aimed at that age group (oh my oldest used to complain bitterly about "one more book of orphan surviving the jungle, desert, horrible care-giver, fill in the blank) no one in these books is all-good and few are all-bad. I would love to know if the target age group picks that up.

The rec:s from you and SEP has really made me want to read Hunger Games. I had not heard of the books before, but I've found out that they are also translated to swedish. Futuristic dystopia is a genre I like alot. One of my favourite books ever is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. I also liked "The Road" by Cormack McCarthy.

I'll get back with my opinions on "The Indipendence of Miss Mary Bennet" when I've finnished it.

I found it in paperback at the bookstore last week and after hearing so much about it, I finally read it. What a wonderful book. I found the 1st 50 or so pages a little slow but then I couldn't put it down and read all night long. I loved how distinctive the voices of these 3 women were, such great characters. It made me laugh and cry and I loved it.

I agree. It took me a little bit to get into the way she wrote and the different characters, but once I got over that, I devoured the book.

I may be this way with Water for Elephants. I went in skeptical (as I am with any book that gets amazing reviews), but by the end of lunch, I wanted to read more!

I finished Destroyermen: Into the Storm and although I enjoyed it. It is definitely different from my usual choice but very good. The only thing I didn't like was that the ending was left hanging. I know this is a series but I like to see some of the problems solved in a series and none of them were solved in this.
