"WAYR: non-romance for August 2010"

   Heck, it's August already...!?!

Listening to Daphne de Maurier's Rebecca - it's very good but 12 CDs - up to number 7. Reading eat, pray, love for book club.

What are you reading and recommending?

I'm still reading The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, but I put it down to briefly read something quick and light. I'm a little over 1/5 of the way through. The pages are different than real books on the nook. So, of 500+ pages, I'm a little over 100 pages through. I'm enjoying it, but I need to have a big block of time to read (good thing I'll be in the car for 13 hours this weekend). I plan to read the rest on vacation plus some others.

It looks like book club was decided on next Saturday. We're discussing the book over dinner and then going to the movie. So, I'll be reading the entire book this week. Then back to my regularly-scheduled reading.

I got it on audio - read by the author.
Listening is better than the read so far - but I am in the Italy stages...

I finished and saw the movie on Saturday. I liked it, but I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it. Same with the movie. I actually liked the India section the best. I think I liked the Indonesia section better in the movie because of the beautiful scenery.

I read "Rebecca" when I was a teenager, and I remember I thought it was great. Maybe it's time for a reread.

I'm trying to work up the enthusiasm to read my next bookclub-book: "The story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski. Anyone read it?
In the mean time, I'm getting to know Sam Jellicoe and Rick Addison.

Heard the Edgar Sawtelle book had an annoying ending - I'll wait for your verdict, Malin.

Just finnished the Edgar Sawtelle-book. 600 pages of LOTS of facts about dogs and their breeding and training, very slow first half of the book, good language, some paranormal things like ghosts (which I do not care for), no explanation whatsoever regarding the main conflict in the book and a terrible ending. If you are extremely interested in dogs, you may like this book. I didn't!
(Sorry for not being good-hearted here.)

It will be interesting to hear what my bookclub thinks about it when we meet tomorrow.

I have been rereading "Plainsong" and its sequel "Eventide" by Kent Haruf. They are among my favorite books. No other author writes like he does about the plainspoken people of the plains.

Listening to something really challenging and even darker now - Lionel Shriver's 'we need to talk about Kevin'

The book is a middle aged NY woman's letters to her estranged husband about their son Kevin, their lives, mistakes and 'that thursday'. That thursday was the day 15 yr old Kevin killed 7 people at school.

Uneasy and confronting.

8. "more mysteries"
In response to message #0

I'm listening to more mysteries this week. Just finished Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Crime by Tamar Myers and tomorrow will start the next book in this series, No use Dying Over Spilled Milk. Then I plan to listen to the first two books in a mystery series by Joann Fluke. The first book is called Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, and the next one is Strawberry Cheesecake Murder.

After listening to two books in the Pennsylvania Dutch series by Tamar Myers in a row, I had planned to start the Joanne Fluke mystery series. But I've decided I've had enough light fluff for the timebeing and want something with more substance. So I'm going to listen to South of Broad by Pat Conroy and then probably get to the first two books in the Joanne Fluke series after that.

I posted this on WARN and realized it should be here. I'm listening to Davina Porter read The Faeries of Dreamdark by Laini Taylor. It is delightful. The characters are wonderful and the story keeps me coming back. Davina Porter's portrayal of the various characters is terrific. I would recommend this book to anyone.
