"WAYR week of July 18 - July 24?"

   Hi ladies

I just finished Dead Center, a mystery by David Rosenfelt. This is part of a series featuring a lawyer named Andy Carpenter.

Now I'm listening to The Guest List by Fern Michaels. I guess it could be classified as romantic suspense. I'm not far into it yet but liking it so far.

So what are you all reading?

I'm reading It Takes A Rebel by Stephanie Bond and am enjoying it. It's the second book of two, so I look forward to reading Jack's brother's Derek's book.

I'm a little more than halfway through and have to finish by next Sunday for book club. Shouldn't be hard as I'm reading about 50 pages a night when I actually pick it up (and 0 pages a night when I don't pick it up at all).

In response to message #0

After reading that JoAnn Ross' new book The Homecoming is very loosely linked to her High Risk series - i.e it features ex-SEALs, I finished reading the series. I had read the first two but since i found the second one very slow i had put off the rest. The thirs and fourth were good though (Shattered and Breakpoint).

I am going through a strange reading period and have found myself picking up books and putting them aside after some chapters. This happened with Julia London's Highlander Unbound. The writing was okay. I didn't like how the story was developing though.

Read Meg Cabot's Every Boy's Got One - a quick read.

Now have Susan Andersen's Skintight - that Nancy sent me for my brthday - to start while the girls are at swimming lessons.

I'm just about finished with this one and I've gotta say...it's not wow-ing me, and I usually LOVE CR's books! It's the first book of a trilogy about the Baci sisters, who own a family vineyard in Napa Valley. California. The hero is kinda jerky, the heroine, a bit too immature, and the secondary romance is nice but oh so predictable We of course get to see a bit of the h/h of the next book in the series (the oldest sister and the oldest son who owns the neigboring vineyard) so maybe it will pick up.

Is it just me who is not wow-ed by this book? Has anyone else read this one? If so, I'd love to hear how you liked it...

I haven't read one of hers since maybe her debut novels, but I LOVED the cover to this one and picked it up. It may be a winner for me because I haven't read her in forever. I do have her Knitting series on its way though. I'll let you know what I think after I've finished. Gotta finish book club first.

I just got around to reading this (after working my way through all the other Outlander series books and some of the Lord John's) and is it just me or is this book b-o-r-i-n-g??? All the others were so fast pasted, full of action and just non stop going from one thing to another...this one just seems to be going over stuff from the past books and the new stuff is moving very slowly. I'm over half way through it, but so far it just isn't doing much for me.

I kept putting off downloading it to my Kindle till I caught up on some of the other new releases of books till I was ready for something exciting..well so far I'm really dissapointed.

Is it just me?

I'm thinking of taking a break and downloading the new Nora Roberts the Search then going back to the Echo.

I am finding it a bit hard to remember back, but I know I did enjoy it. Not as fast moving as some of others, but then I thought some of them were too fast moving and too much happening! I think though that I am okay with a 'slow' book, doesn't get to me. And what was happening was enough to hook me. Will be interesting to know what you think once you do finish it.

   Lynda,

I really liked this book. I liked the theme of mortality as she explores it from so many angles. The younger generation is much more a focus in this story. I did have to resort to a map more than once to understand all the Revolutionary references. It has inspired me to plan a trip to the Hudson River Valley next fall and we will visit Saratoga.

As far as fast moving vs slow moving. Watch out. The second half of the book is very fast paced, one could even say explosive.

   Kate,

The Ocean Between Us is an all time favorite of mine. I had read it when it first came out in 2004, then traded it in at my used bookstore. Four months later son tells us he's going to the Naval Academy! I had to buy a copy to keep.

I'm tempted to get an autographed copy of the new re-release and hold onto it in case there ever is a daughter-in-law.

I'm not reading anything right now and really need a happy book.

Forgot to say I read Dark Lover over the weekend. I know there is a big following by many of you of her books.

I decided I needed to challenge myself to read at least one. I am not sure I really enjoy vampire books, and not even sure about it after finishing this one. However have ordered the next one and got the 3 after that cheap, so who can resist! I read some of your chat in another posting (yeah, I am into reading spoilers especially on books I am unsure about) it was enough to encourage me to journey on.

I felt a bit self conscious going into the local shop to buy the cheap 3, (others I ordered online). I was worried about what the lady in the shop was thinking of a 60 year old buying such books!! I just took a deep breath and marched right on in!

Many like Dark Lover, but it's actually my least favorite of the entire series. The second and third hooked me. I've actually reread the second and third books which say a lot because I rarely reread things.

I'm glad that you are giving the BDB books a try. I hope that you like them, but they may not be for you. I admire you for reading outside of your comfort zone. Dark Lover wasn't my favorite on my first read. I liked it a lot more on my rereads, however. We could bring the discussion back up, if you'd like. Then, you could post your observations and others could reply. Just let me know, and I'll go hunting for it.

Thanks April and Dawn for the encouragement. I am waiting for No. 2 to arrive. I think I am pretty happy chasing up all the past comments and keeping them in mind. As I said I had a quick read already of them and they enticed me to persevere on, despite my dislike of all things vampire! I guess good writing helps overcome such dislike! The blood drinking makes me a bit squeamish!! But hey its fantasy.

Echoing others sentiments here too. I didn’t particularly love the first book when I read it and thought the entire series was hyped up. However, I made myself read book 2 and was hooked. I had to get book 3 and by then I was a devout follower of JR Ward. I hope you enjoy the next few books and as for a 60 year old buying “such” books, they’re all probably thinking “wow, she must know a thing or two ” – my 85 year old great-aunt by marriage (after becoming a widow) hooked up with a younger man (65 years old) and is enjoying every moment of living in sin. She’s an inspiration to all the women in my family HEA’s come in every form at any age

Her story is so much more poignant because even though she was already separated from her very abusive husband, she decided to file for a divorce as well. He died before the divorce became finalized. To consider all that she has gone through in her life all that she has survived, we are all so happy that she found her HEA. Now, she’s living with a kind, loving man, spends as much time travelling, she has decided to try her hand in construction and is in the process of designing her new house. She really epitomizes that life can start at any age.

This is a historical paranormal which you don't find much of--I'm enjoying it so far. I look forward to the brother, Will's story. I was going to read Stephanie Bond's other book next, but I downloaded a bunch of samples on my Kindle and got hooked by this book. I love being able to read samples first.

Last week, I read Lauren Dane's Relentless and liked it a lot, so I read Laid Bare and Coming Undone. Loved them both. This is erotic romance where the plot isn't an excuse for endless sex scenes. It's very hot, yes, but moving too (I'll admit I got a little misty-eyed reading the 3 of them). I can't wait for Inside Out, her next contemporary about the Brown family and friends and I will definitely check her backlist.

Now, I'm reading Jess Granger's Beyond the Shadows, the 2nd in her SciFi series. I'm enjoying it so far.

I'd love to read Lauren Dane if she balances the erotic part of the book with the storyline well. I have found that I do desperately need a story to be strong besides steamy.

Can you tell me where you buy her books from Linou? Is it just as ebooks? I was wondering if you have a secret place I can find her books cheaper than on Bookdepository because they are over Eur10 a book. Seems like all the new authors I would love to try who write erotic romance have books that are double the price of mass market paperbacks and with my finances as they are I cannot bring myself to buy them at that price.

Sorry, Luci, I have no secret bookstore to tell you about! I bought them as ebooks on the kobo website. It's the only site I could find that doesn't have geographical restrictions for them and they're usually selling their books cheaper than most (I got them for less than 10$). Don't you read ebooks at all? I'm not sure that, in the end, they are better for my wallet than paper books because I buy so much more books since I have an e-reader but they still are usually cheaper than paper books.

And yes, I thought LD definitely balanced the steamy scenes and the emotional ones (and sometimes, they are the same ones). Laid Bare was a bit out of my comfort zone but I'm glad I gave it a try.

Dang Linou, I was really hoping you had! Its not that I have anything against ebooks. Its just that when I had the ebook reader craze it wasn't guaranteed that they would work with our voltage. Now that they are internationally available I do not have the financial stability for it. I am starting a new job in September so maybe next year I might be in a more comfortable position. I had looked for readers when we were in London and Spain but then just sort of gave up.

I have lots of ebooks on my laptop that I unfortunately never get around to read becasue i read in bed and reading on the laptop in bed is waaay uncomfotable and too much like work. I have read SEP's NBC on my husband's PDA but it involved converting files and stuff - couldn't get the hang of it.

Will keep Lauren Dane within my sights though.

i recently downloaded a free ebook called The Tempest - and i still haven't read it for the reasons I mentioned above.

In response to message #0

I finished The Guest List by Fern Michaels. Liked the love story angle as well as the mystery, although I had it all figured out long before the main characters did.

Now I'm listening to Grime and Punishment, a mystery by Jill Churchill based in the Chicago area. This is the first in a series, so I guess I'm hooked on yet another mystery series. The main character is Jane Jeffry, a thirty something widow raising three kids who tries to help solve murders in her neighborhood.

22. "Rose Lerner"
In response to message #0

I finished Susan Andersen's Skintight thanks Nancy!! and enjoyed it. I have Just for Kicks in my piles so I will soon follow this book up.

Next I am so so glad I picked up Rose Lerner's In For A Penny. I bought it after i read a couple of good reviews and have been hesitant to try it - especially after reading a few books I bought after great reviews that just didn't work for me.

Yesterday night I couldn't sleep - had just opened the electricity bill and gotten the shock of my life. So when i finished Skintight I was wondering what to read next. I picked up a medieval but put it back. I needed something that really grabbed and kept my attention.

Then i picked up In For a Penny and i admit, I am only three chapters in but I already found it difficult to put down to get to work. First off its not full of characters thinking this and then thinking that and then thinking the other and so on. It also doesn't have characters being secretive to each other. There is total honesty from page one and that is indeed refreshing. Plus I am enjoyig the writing.

of course its still early days so I hope the rest lives up to the beginning.

When I picked this one up at the library didn't realize it was the beginning of a trilogy. So far I'm really enjoying it. But it is making me really miss Key West. DH and I have been talking about going in the fall, don't know if I can wait till then!
I was wondering if anyone has read the new Karin Slaughter book. I gave up on her after reading Beyond Touch(?). Now I've heard she brought back Sara Minton. Wondering if anyone has read it and what they think. Dee

   Hey Dee,

have missed you here! I recently read a KS book and thought of you because i remembered your posts when Beyond Reach was published.

So in answer to your question about Karin Slaughter. Some of her books have the very annoying IMHO characteristic of having different US and rest of the world titles. So Beyond Reach was SKin Privilege here and i had pre-ordered it and it was more expensive than normal hardbacks. Before i could read it I had read your post about it here and went on to read the spoilers. And I am glad i did because if I had read the book then got to the last page I wouldn't have been able to sleep for a week in shock i am sure. JT was my favourite character in that series - which is strange for me considering he was a cheater. Loved his character.

Anyway, i sold my copy and did not know whether i would read her anymore. Then i bought her second in the Will Trent series - Fractured - because i had enjoyed Triptych so I thought i could give it a try. After a long time in my pile i picked it up and gave it a chance. I gave myself till the end of chapter 1 and decided that if it didn't grab me i would put it down. But that's exasctly when it grabbed me - end of chapter 1. I am glad I read it as it brought back how much i loved her writing style. So if i were you I would read that by her first before you go on to read th elast two as it will help you get to know Will Trent more as in the following books there is Will Trent besides Sara Linton.

After Fractured she wrote Genesis (which is called Undone in the US). I have this one in my pile but from what I understand, it is set in Georgia and its a Will Trent book but in it Sara Linton is reintroduced. Her latest book - the one in hardback out now, that is called Broken is a Grant County book. It has Sara Linton in it and she calls in Will Trent's help. It also has Lena which is where i am not so happy as i never like Lena.

I do not know if KS will try to give Sara a new love interest and i don't know if that would work well, but in my mind it would be extremely difficult to trump Jeffrey 'sex on a stick' Tolliver.

Luci, I'm so happy to hear from you! Everytime I see a KS book or go to a neat book store I think of you. I have read a few of the WT books. Can't remember titles and did enjoy them, and I guess I'm ready to check out the ones I haven't. I'm still mad at how KS ended that book. I can't believe that I'm still upset! lol..lol.. kind of scary.
Hope all is well with you and your bookstore. Dee

I couldn't believe it either and i know many readers of hers were really disappointed. I reason that it's her book and she has a right to write what she wants but i still cannot understand the reasoning. Thank God she's an excellent author.

Well, the book shop is undergoing some changes. I am moving it from its present location to my home. Have a room I can use and i am taking the same shelvings - which should give the place a homely feel. I will be focusing more on the online shop as I live to the South of the island so I will not be so central anymore. Its was a bit hardbreaking until i decided to make the move but this year sales hve been drastically down, all over the island, so it has gotten really difficult even to cover expenses. I found a morning job and will work from home in the afternoon. Will make order deliveries, and will also have a pick-up point at my husband's office, which is centrally located. God willing this will work out.

rereading Ain't she sweet and the most terrible thing happened to me today.

we took our boat and went to a nearby island. there is a wonderful old lighthouse where I usually try to get some tan and BF can dive. As I was laying on the dock, reading Ain't, a big boat passed and made big waves who got me, all of my stuff and the book soaking wet. I almost cried.

Another wondeful book albeit a bit gruesome at times. I REALLY don't like those parts!

I'm getting a little nervous because I'm nearing the end....

Last week I read a beautiful book by Lorraine Heath called Always to Remember. It was very different and very moving. I am not an American historical romance reader but this Civil War book was excellent.

This is the second in the series and I'm really liking it a lot. It's a historical paranormal. And it was under $4.00, which makes it more appealing. I've had lots of library books that have gone unread, because I just prefer to read on my Kindle. But I have to get over that, because my budget is hurting.

36. "Suzanne Enoch - Sam Jellicoe Series"
In response to message #0

I started doing a re-read of Suzanne Enoch's Flirting with Danger, book 1 of her Sam Jellicoe series. I never got a chance to read the rest of the series, even though it's been sitting in my TBR pile since forever.

I'm happy to do this re-read, because clearly I don't remember anything about this book! For some reason I thought it was written in the first person - it's not! Pleasant surprise.
