"WAYR: Non-romance for July"

Currently reading the Man who mistook his wife for a hat - Oliver Sacks. Read it years ago and I am re-visiting these great anecdotes on the mystery of the human brain and nervous system.

What are you reading?

Indigo Slam by Robert Crais. As soon as I finish, I'll be starting the next in the series, L.A. Requiem. These are books in his Elvis Cole detective series.

I bought this for my Dad, but seeing as he's not a big reader, I kept it LOL. Finally getting around to reading it now.

I just finished South of Broad by Pat Conroy. I really enjoyed it, however, it took me awhile to get through, like 3 weeks. The characters and stories are very layered and deep. I don't know if I will be reading much non-romance for awhile. I would pick up another Pat Conroy in the future.

His books are not light and/or easy reads. Good stuff. I find too much of his books in a row blur together, but once in awhile is good. I read a lot of his older books, but I haven't read many of the new releases. I've heard only good things about South of Broad though.

   Jen,
Have you finished The Passage? I'm almost done with the second download section on audible. I didn't know it was a vampire book (I don't do those) when I bought it. But, since I have it (I am cheap) I'm going to give it a try.

So far, it's fairly vampire-ish.

OK, finished The Passage a few days ago and the characters are haunting me. That's a sign of a good story. I will read the sequels.

   Hey Patricia!

You thought it WAS vampirish? I thought it wasn't, at least not in the current trend of Sookie Stackhouse and Twilight.

I just saw Justin Cronin do a reading at Books, Inc. on Fourth Street in Berkeley. Unfortunately I had to leave early to get Kenji to bed, but it was really interesting. He said that in creating his characters he always asks himself what's the character's secret, what aren't they telling anyone? On reflection, I realized that's part of what made his characters so compelling in the book, even (or especially) the minor ones. The first question from the audience was "where do you get your ideas?" and I had to cringe on SEP's behalf.

It's funny you use the word haunting. A friend of mine and I were just discussing the first chapter (with Amy and her mom) and that's the word I used to describe it. Maybe I'm just especially sensitive right now though, being a new mom myself!

We should meet for lunch soon!

Jen

Oh, goodness. I put the book down after that first part. I got all sniffly and I'm not even a new mom.

I couldn't make his signing because of bad storms, I think. There was a reason, but I can't remember what it was. I'm jealous.

Now that I'm almost finished with The Den of Antiquity mystery series by Tamar Myers, I decided to start her other mystery series, The Pennsylvania Dutch mysteries. After just one book, I'm not sure I like it as much as the other series, but I'll listen to one or two more books since they're fairly quick reads before I make up my mind.

Now I'm listening to L.A. Requiem, another Elvis Cole detective novel by Robert Crais. We are finding out more about the past of his partner Joe Pike in this book.

Have just started Spandau Phoenix by Greg Iles. This is a long book so will probably take me most of the week.
