"What Are You Reading ? - Week of March 21st - 27th"

Can't believe how quickly this week has flown by!

Reading-wise I haven't read as much as I would have liked. I'm on book 2 of Nora Robert's O'Hurley Sisters, "Dance to the Piper". The only thing that irritates me is that my copy doesn't have a pic of the hero and heroine. I like looking at book covers, so am a bit disappointed I don't have anything to compare the hero too.

Speaking of covers, I learnt that the first O'Hurley book, "The Last Honest Woman" was NR's 50th book with Silhoutte. As such, the publishers allowed NR's face to be painted as the heroine's face on the cover - How cool is that?

What also amuses me greatly is how old these books are. In TLHW, the hero's name was Dylan, which I guess back in the early 80's was not a popular name. In DTTP, leg warmers were heavily used enjoying the trip down memory lane

So what y'all reading?

- Amal

1. "RE: Julie Garwood Update"
In response to message #0

First I wanted to say thank you to those who replied to my question and concern about Julie Garwood Last week.

Update: The first and only book I had read by Julie Garwood up until two weeks ago was "The Wedding" and I absolutely LOVED it! I had picked up five of her books recently and started with "For The Roses". I was so disappointed that I was hesitant to start on another. (BTW I have this weird querk where I hate to read the covers because I don't want to spoil the story. I know, its weird, but that's me).

So, I next picked up a Stepahnie Laurens book - one of the Bastion Club novels "The Lady Chosen". I am never disappointed with Stepahnie Laurens. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

After reading your comments, however, I realized that one of the JG books I picked up was the story that comes before "The Wedding" - "The Bride" - - so that is what I read next. I was certainly not disappointed. I LOVED it too! Thanks for saving me.

Two of the other books I picked up are "Ransom" and "Shadow Music". Unfortunately I don't have "The Secret" which comes first in the series - but no matter - I'm starting on Ransom today.

Hope you're all enjoying a good book.

Gina - Colorado

2. "Jill Shalvis, Loretta Chase, Julia Quinn & Suzanne Enoc"
In response to message #0

This was a strange week for me. I started reading Loretta Chase's The Last Hellion and found it really slow going. I needed something with more action so I also started Jill Shalvis' Get a Clue and was enjoying it. But I really was in the mood for a good historical romance.

So, unfortunately, I stopped reading The Last Hellion as it did not pick up enough for me. I put aside Get a Clue but I will get back to it as it is good - i am just not in the right mood.

I read Julia Quinn's Dancing at Midnight. Was okay but i was afraid i was getting into a slump.

I just received the third book in Suzanne Enoch's The Notorious Gentlemen trilogy and since i had the three books in hand I decided to get going with those. I am very glad I started the first one After the Kiss. I am really enjoying it. I have only read one SE book and one novella. So I have lots of back reading to do now.

My favorite Suzanne Enoch book is A Matter of Scandal. It's one of her earlier books. I absolutely love it. Love to reread it.

Finished Return to Summer House by Jude Deveraux. I just love the theme of being able to change your destiny by changing something in your past, which has been the theme of Summer House, which I read more than a week ago and Return to Summer House.

Now I'm reading Whispers at Midnight by Karen Robards. Heavy on the romance with the threat of a crazy on the loose who is after the heroine for some reason.

I absolutely loved Whispers at Midnight! The secondary characters make up the story every bit as much as the primary characters, and all are fabulous.

Over the past week, I read the first 4 books in the IAD series and really liked them a lot, especially No Rest for the Wicked and Dark Needs at Night's Edge. I didn't enjoy Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night quite as much, mainly because Bowen was a little too alpha and overbearing for my taste (loved Mariketa though) and some editing problems bothered me. Everything is obviously well planned, with storylines introduced 1, 2 or 3 books in advance, so why were there so many mistakes in this book ? Like Emma being 70 in book 1 and 80 in this one, or the final day of the Hie taking place at the Serpente Fyre in book 2 and at the Dragon Fyre in book 3 and so on. Those are small things but still, if the reader can catch them, why the editor didn't ?

I'm now taking a short break from the series and reading Susan Wiggs' The Charm School.

I finished "Black Jack" by Lora Leigh last week. Not good. Really disappointing and so glad I didn't actually buy the book LOL.

This week I'm reading "Tangled Up in Love" by Heidi Betts. So far, so good.

I'm also reading "Trial by Fire" by Jo Davis. Oh, this is good. Very sexy! Great hero, funny and sassy heroine. Interesting plot, good dialogue and smoky hot steamy burn your fingers sex scenes! Enjoying it so much that I've just got the next two books by Davis in the series (it's about a fire station, so lots of other hunky firefighters with their stories).

   Lanie--

I read all 3 of the Jo Davis books and really enjoyed them. Very hot reads with pretty good mystery story lines. I can't wait for the next books in the series-- the 4th book will be out in May and then a 5th book in December. I want a calendar with these hot firefighters.

And I don't want a calendar, I want the real deal! So going to check out the fire station on Mt Vic on my way home from work tonight

Right now I am listening to my first Suzanne Brockman book, The Unsung Hero. As of right now I am really enjoying it. When I am through listening to this book I will probably start to read Black Jack by Lora Leigh.

I know many have said that Black Jack isn't very good. Since I have read all of her Tempting SEALs books and all of her Elite Ops books, I really don't want to miss one just incase there is parts in there that provide updates on my favorite characters or provide good background for future books.

Okay, so I haven't gotten around to starting the Lora Leigh book yet, because after finishing the first Troubleshooters book by Suzanne Brockmann I just had to listen to the second book, The Defiant Hero. Now having finished that book, I am looking forward to the third. All I have to say is WOW. I have loved both books. All of the different story lines involved are captivating, but I especially am loving the Sam Starrett/Alyssa Locke storyline!

I started Robb's Fantacy in Death the other night.

I finished Diana Gabaldon's A Breath of Snow & Ashes and decided it was time to take a break from Jamie and Clair. Next up in the Outlander series will be The Lord John Grey, The Brotherhood of the Blade before starting An Echo In The Bone.

But before getting back to that series, I have a few other new ones that I downloaded to the Kindle to read...Erica Spindler's Blood Vines and Susan Wiggs' Summer Hide Away.

I'm not hating it, but I'm not rushing to read it either and I don't think of it while I'm not reading it (much like with Guernsey). I'm not just not enthralled. My coworker said she thought it was ok. I'm just not feeling romance right now so taking a little break.

Or whatever the title is. I'm continuing my anti-romance phase which is weird, but I'm depleting the TBR by quite a bit.

I liked parts of Olive Kitteridge, but I was a bit disappointed. I bet it is a good discussion book though between the characters, how it was written and seeing things through Olive's point of view or not. I wish we had seen something through her son's POV and wonder if that would have made me like him more.

I liked this book April. What appealed most was the POV was from the young boy with Asperger's syndrome. I loved getting into his head to see how he thought, why he was compelled to do certain things, and how he interpreted the world's response to his idiosyncracies.

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

I read Moonlight Road over the weekend and enjoyed it, I always like to catch up with other characters and was really pleased to finally hear the next part of Ian and Marcie's story.

Have just started Smooth Talking Stranger. Had to wait quite awhile for this book as wasn't out in paper back until this year here.

I hope you enjoy Smooth Talking Stranger, Kate. It is my favorite of the Travis family trilogy. Jack is one of my all time favorite heroes...soooo delish...and I enjoyed the heroine, Ella, too. I just did a reread of STS, and Sugar Daddy yoo, since my memory of Gage was a little fuzzy...really great reads!

LK has a new contemporary series coming out in November, which is based in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest--I'm really looking forward to it, as I think LK is one of the few authors who has successfully made the leap from historical to contemp writing...IMO she writes both very well.

I really enjoyed Moonlight Road. Laughed out loud several times. I reread Ian and Marcie's story first to refresh my memory. I was glad to see them back. I always thought it was strange that after their book that they were never mentioned again.

So did I think it odd. And I thought Ian might have gone off into a singing career. But no! Studying and teaching music. I had always pictured the cabin in the middle of nowhere, but in this book it seems it is a lot nearer to things.

I used to be a fan of Elizabeth Lowell way back in the late 90's(?).
There were 4 books in a series and I still highly recommend them. They were well researched and I learned a lot about the precious gems business. the books are Amber Beach, Jade Island, Pearl Cove and Midnight in Ruby Bayou. They are suspense and some of the locale is the Pacific Northwest and I remember reading JAK around the same time and thinking that I need to move there.

If you could get those 4--definitely give EL a shot--she is worth it.

Yes, those are the ones that were recommended to me, given my love of romantic suspense Unfortunately, when I got to the library last week, the first of the series was unavailable **sigh** So I grabbed The Wrong Hostage, figuring, ya know . . .same author. But I can't get into it.

I have been a fan of EL for a long time and her 'gem' series was wonderful, but she just stopped writing them...I wanted to have more stories of the family. She has done some more books and they are great too, she has a new one coming out this summer, can't remember the name though.

Her daughter has written 2 books too, Heather Lowell and I really loved those, but she has not done any more that I know of.

Enjoy!

I finished Home before Dark by Susan Wiggs and just like all of her books, I loved it. I especially like the hero, Dusty.
Now I'm starting Phillipa Gregory's The Queen's Fool. This is the first of her books that I have read but I've heard great things about them. So far so good.

I finally picked it up yesterday after seeing it at Target several times. I'm only at the begining but so far so good. I hope I enjoy it since it is a trilogy and that means I will need to read all 3.

I haven't read SB since HS.

This trilogy is a re-release. I remember when it first came out and I think I fell in love with Chase. I think I have them packed away somewhere--going to look for them.

I have read and loved all three in this series. I think each book has its own unique tone. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be Texas! Sage although that is a very difficult choice to make. They are all enjoyable reads!

This was a little creepier than I like.

Also, does anyone else have issues with prologues or flashbacks? I spend a lot of the time thinking about how the prologue fits back into the story, or when the past and present are going to merge. It distracts me!

I see several of you are reading this, too. I just started it this evening and have only gotten a few pages read. Not too thrilled that it's written in the first person. I usually don't care for that, but I won't give up on it. Didn't realize it's part of a series. There's no indication of that on the cover, which makes me so mad. Oh well....

I think this is my second LK book ever and am looking forward to getting in to it.

   Nancy,

LK is a great author. I don't think you will be too disappointed. I own all of her books but one and am quickly making a dent in them. The only contemporary of hers that I have read so far is Blue-Eyed Devil, which I absolutely LOVED!

This past week I read Royal's Bride by Kat Martin and started What Happens in London by Julia Quinn. Royal's Bride was pretty good. Frustrating but very good. I have only just started What Happens in London, but it is already making me laugh out loud. Have to love that!

I haven't read anything laugh out loud funny lately so am treating myself to the last two Stephanie Plum books that I still had left to read. Finished Plum Spooky last night. Carl the monkey, food fights in a produce warehouse, and Elmer the fire farter. Need I say more? Today I'll start Finger Lickin' Fifteen.

After that, I'm planning to read Denis Lehane's Shutter Island, so as to finally be able to watch the movie.

Jenny I want to go back and do re-reads of Catherine Anderson's books too (and I have them ALL here). They always give me such a 'lift'.

If you have ever wondered why she writes each book, go to her website, to the BB section, on the Main conference she has a post that is in the top section that she has titled 'what inspried each book'. She is telling the 'story of the stories'. I have always known that she wrote each book because of something that she went through, saw or heard about....and I talked her into telling them. As she has time (she is under deadline right now) she is adding to the post.

She is doing her 'stand alone' books first then will get to the series.
