It was a huge hit in France, it was even made into a movie with a local star, but I didn't read it. My mom and my sister did and didn't think it was all that great, we usually like the same books so I trusted them. Sorry I can't be more help !

OK I have to defend it. I read it for my book group and enjoyed it. It's not romantic fiction but it is beautifully written. The beginning is annoying because the teenager whose story starts the first chapter is very self absorbed but she grows and grows on you through the book. I think you would like it Linda.

My friend who did the review for our book group pointed out that Renee, the concierge, and her friend Manuela have almost the same first names as Rene Descartes en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descartes · and Immanuel Kant en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immanuel_Kant and the women's views of the world reflects the philosophers'. It was a very interesting discussion.

I do things like that too. Actually I love books that make me want to do that.

And your group discussion must have really been something. Did you find yourself siding with Renee or her friend Manuela more in their viewpoints? Or did their characters sway you more?

I haven't read it yet but have been curious. My question... Do you want to kill yourself when it's over? Or is the ending more positive. I just can't deal with downer endings these day. (Or ever, as a matter of fact.)

Linda - have you read it yet? What did you think?

I loved this book. It was so beautifully written and evoked some haunting imagery. I wish that we got to know Renee and her philosophy on life and beauty sooner. She touched the lives of so many in such a gentle and understated way - including the angsty teenage Paloma, who has a pessimistic philosophy on life and the future. If only the Mister Ozu, the catalyst for change and understanding, moved into the building sooner...

For SEP - the end is sad, but not without hope. I think if you like Olive Kitteridge, you will enjoy this one.

Efy (Sydney)

I haven't read it yet, Efy. I've been trying to decide if I should go ahead and read the english version....or should I wait and try it in french. My french reading is coming along nicely, I think, but still slowly. I've about decided to go ahead with the english version, and then maybe in french later on. Is that cheating?
