"Small things"

are often a celebration for me. Today it's the first wave of our daffodils still blooming, the second wave with buds getting ready to open any time now, and the third wave with a full complement of green but not quite to bud stage yet. And as I left home to go get my car inspected, I saw robins on the now quickly greening lawn. I 've started seeing more red-tailed hawks recently too. When times are tough (like now), nature is my go-to for grounding and balance. P.S. But I also have to admit I was pretty darned pleased with my ten year old car not needing a single repair. Not exactly a nature thing, but a good thing anyway on an already nice day. |

I love your attitude, Linda. So many of us take the little things for granted. Mother Nature has a way about her that makes everything so beautiful after a long, nasty, winter. Enjoy your daffodils and everything else that Spring brings your way.For me, it's our azalea bushes in bloom and the grass getting nice and green...finally. Nancy326 central Florida |

What a lovely post. It's autumn here. I moved into my new home nearly a year ago. There was an ancient camellia that looked like it was dying when I moved in. I have researched the plant, befriended gardeners at the local nursery, nurtured it - and it is now covered in hundreds of hopeful little buds. I can't wait to see it blossom. Efy (Sydney)

Oh Efy, doesn't saving that camellia give you a real sense of joy and accomplishment?! Great job; good for you! Please report back at blossom time, okay? When I was much younger I rented from a horticulturist who threw away plants past their prime, which I of course "rescued" with his permission. As well as enjoying daffodils and other perennials that return every year (oh, my peonies!), I love the really old trees around our old house, and try to imagine all the different families and kids growing up that they've witnessed over time -- and will continue to do so after us. Besides enjoying the beauty, it's another way to keep one's place on the planet in perspective too. |

Have you ever tried growing peonies in Fla, Nancy? You're right of course that peonies just aren't fond of weather that gets too hot, especially for the blooms. However, a friend of mine from Dallas who was visiting was determined to take some home to try. The grower I got my peonies from told her there is a variety that can better withstand heat, so she took a couple home to try out, and they were doing well the last I heard. It might be worth trying one bush in a shady, sheltered spot, that is, if you really want to. (Mine are all in morning-sun areas with absolutely no afternoon sun.) Just a thought... |
