"Dead Book Stores"
| |
This title could mean a changing industry, an economic update, a rant, or possibly a good name for a rock band! Maybe all. BOTH (YES, BOTH) Borders near me are closing. Waaaaa. That has been my favorite book store for a long time. So I'm really #@*&ed off. The only remotely interesting thing I noted was that every last historical romance was already gone, leaving some paranormals and contemps. I feel another rant coming on!!! Then, because I was in SUCH a good mood(!), I started noticing how many dead strip malls there are while new ones are being built all with the result of acres and acres of empty asphalt where no trees or grass can grow! Arrrrgggghhhh. and since I was in traffic I was reminded that gas prices have spiked again and people are STILL driving gas-guzzling SUVs with JUST ONE PERSON in each vehicle in rush hour traffic. Triple grrrrrr...... Whoever said the human species was the smartest and best steward of the planet was obviously a human trying to make even more money than he'll ever need. EOV (end of vent)

We have no none nada Books a Million here and Barnes and Noble is a road trip a hike and a safari away. We do have used book stores FOR NOW so we can buy what they have until they become dead book stores too and then I will re-read what I own SLOWLY. Notice I'm not counting on the library since they've already cut their hours and how many books they can buy. I wonder if there will be an underworld selling books like crack cocaine or maybe free and enlightened peoples from other countries will airlift books into the deprived neglected oppressed and soon to be even more illiterate parts of America. It could happen. Unless someone figures out how to make books out of asphalt macadam concrete and dead book stores. EOS (end of story) |

Ditto and double ditto. You make a great point about how sad it is. While it's the most sad for the newly unemployed, it's also sad for longtime customers. I knew some of those booksellers for more than 15 years at one store. We're definitely living through a sea change in culture which is hard hard hard. speaking of which... I apologize for my three rants. The two above and the following one below. I just came back from Wally World to pick up milk and two new releases from this week. This supersize WW has the biggest book section of all the WWs I've seen, like a mini bookstore, so guess what. They cut the number of single title romance titles they carry BY HALF!!!! Flippin' 50%! Just in the last week or two. HOLY CRAP, BATMAN! Does this mean all books will have to come from either amazon or b&n? Well to hell with that. I already have a big stock pile, and then I could always re-read the longer novels of Gabaldon, and all the Russians like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. All those long 19th century novels should keep me busy too. Or I really hope the technology evolves so we can buy directly from an author instead of a publisher. Great idea right? The publishers are already making authors do much of their own marketing these days anyway via FB etc. Just a thought. TD (totally disgusted) |

I mourn the loss of bookstores, I live in a rather large city in California so have more options than if I lived in many other places. I miss the small independent book sellers...so many gone...I fear never to return. That being said, I am partners with my sis and BIL who opened a cafe/coffee bar in northern Nebraska. We serve breakfast and lunch (aka: dinner to the midwest folks). The part of the business that is just about ready to be opened is the bookstore, later we hope to open the garden shop. Sometimes and in some places, crazy folks try to buck the trend. Wish us luck! |

Our nearest independents weren't in competition with the chains because of their remote locations. They started going downhill in the last few with the economy, amazon and kindle. One has become a UBS and the other is filing bankruptcy. |
