"International Fashion Rules"

Here in the states, there is an unwritten fashion rule that white clothes and shoes are only to be worn/used between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Same goes for carrying white handbags.(in some areas, there's an Easter Sunday Exception to the rule)

Due to Labor Day approaching, I've been getting as much wear out of my white shoes and slacks as possible.

Do any of our Internation Seppies have such a rule? I know tropical areas don't, thank heaven. Whenever I go to St. Thomas, I pack as many white cotton slacks and tops as possible, and all of my white sandals go.

And try as I might, I just can't break that rule after Labor Day. I have been known to sneak in some white before Memorial Day when we've had a balmy May.

area )

Really? Its interesting! What are the dates of Memorial and Labour dates to get an idea of the length of time you are talking about?

In Malta there is no such rule. White is generally worn more in summer though. The only unwritten rule regarding white I know is not wearing a white dress to a wedding as that is the bride's colour - although nowadays brides wear ivory or off white rather than pure white.

Luci, Memorial Day is the last Monday of May; and our Labor Day is the first Monday in September, as opposed to May 1 for many other countries.

I live in Florida and we wear white all year long. But I was raised in Connecticut and that 'white only' rule still applies there.

If I coouldn't wear white all year long at home, I wouldn't have much to wear!

Donna, this is too funny!!!!! I was just thinking about this dilemma all week!

I remember my mom always saying that white (shoes or bottoms) can't be worn except between Easter and Labor Day. I've been trying to wear my whites all week. The exception of course, is 'winter white' which I always consider to be a soft/off white wool.

I have cheated and worn it in the week or two after Labor Day if it is hot outside. The guilt usually consumes me!!! LOL

I'm cracking up too, but I've been wearing my white jeans more this week. I'll probably keep wearing them all month since this is hottest month of the year for us. But, I'll feel guilty while I do so.

I'll bet most Seppies, including US Seppies won't know the Memorial Day/Labor Day rule. It stands to reason. I see black tights with white shoes all year. I also see boots in August in California!

I have my white jeans on today and my thought was that I'd probably put them away this week. I also wore my white cargo pants more often this week with the same thought.

I know they say this "rule" is old fashioned but when you grow up with it, it's hard to break. I like the change of seasons, so it's not a sacrifice.

There is no such rule in Sweden. But I think many people think white pants/skirts/shoes are "summery" and therefore wear them mostly in the summer.

I might be an American heathen, but I don't follow those rules whatsoever. If I wanna wear white, I'm going to wear white! In fact, maybe I will tomorrow just cuz

I too am an American heathen!! I am wearing white, and sandals, and hot pink toenail polish today, mostly because I don't want to let go of summer just yet.

I'm with you on that one. I don't actually wear white, though, even in summer. I wear a very light putty/cream color.

I've always held hard and fast to the rules. I don't know why. Especially because I'm in Virginia now and it's like 90 degrees today. I hate wearing open-toed shoes after Labor Day, but it's hot here so I do, but it kills me. I think it's the New Englander in me. My handbag is floral, but it's a white background with purple flowers. I figure that's a bit gray. I think, in this area, October is more Fall so that's really when the closed-toe shoes and non-white come into play, but I put back a white and black dress today because of the "rule".

I've heard about the labor day/white clothes rule, but since I never knew the date, I never quite got it.

No such rules here - except maybe "wear black or at least dark clothes to the funeral".
