"library"

do you ever get on a hold list at the library for a particular book and wonder... "dang, is this book worth waiting 90+ people for?"

actually for CD, I've got some that are 6 people and some 125+.

The 125 is "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

I've been in the 300s before....the good news is I forget about it, then I'm pleasantly surprosed when it arrives!

Isn't it so annoying when that happens? If I REALLY want to read it, I usually just go ahead and buy it because I have no patience. What's even worse is when you've been waiting on a book forever and you FINALLY get your turn and it's while you're out of town so you miss your chance and have to get back on the waiting list again. Sigh. Yes, that's happened to me before, how did you guess?

Woman who works in my local library takes art and drawing classes with me so I usually get on the top of the list

but I rarely use waiting lists, I just go and buy the book.

I can't stand the wait, but I've done it for a Nora Roberts book before because I don't always buy hers. Plus, it's not like she'll miss my money.

I usually don't have the patience to wait. Plus, they'll leave a message on my machine and the boy won't tell me so I usually miss it or don't have time to read it when it does show up. I have bad luck with the library. I haven't been back in forever because I owe them money (it's not my fault - the boy was supposed to return them and didn't).

our library is all electronic, so I get an email saying, "you have until X day to come pick this up"

plus, it tells you exactly how many people are in front of you, and your request is good for 1 calendar year,

it goes pretty fast, like others said, but I don't buy books and just wonder about the book living up to the hype.

I've been in this situation too...frustrating. Sometimes, I'll just go and buy the book if the wait is too long. Also, I have found that sometimes I get lucky and one of the two local UBS's (Used book Stores)near me may get a copy or two after about 2-4 weeks and I'll buy it at half-price.

I have been on a wait list when there was 300+ people ahead of me. I almost bought the book several times but I'm so glad I didn't. The book was Women, Food and God. For me, it was not worth the wait.

I'd love to hear from someone that read this book and liked it. I really wanted to like the book and I don't have any intention of being 'not good-hearted' so QUICK someone post something positive about this book!!!!

I request alot of Audio books and normally the wait isn't that long, but some are and I hate where I'm more the #10 on the list.

My library is really good with their on line system and sending you an email when they come in, plus they call me! I keep telling them I don't need the phone call, but they do it anyways.

I had several on request before I left and they let you put your holds on hold so they won't come in when you are away and as soon as you release the hold, you are next in line for it. Lets see if it works that way as I had to put 2 of my holds on hold before going away.

Good question. I go to the library at least once a week and in all the years of going I've never put anything on hold request UNTIL last week!

I have no patience and just like to read everything new by authors that I like but I'm starting to change. First I don't have a lot of space for books anymore. Second --I was spending too much on books per year and so that brings to third reason--I don't want to buy books that are not "keepers".

So I have on hold the latest Linda Howard and I'm # 153 on the list for that and also the recent Diana Palmer book. I've been waiting and buying her books in pb but i still want to read the new one now!

Here in NYC they are always cutting the budget for the Library and so I used to have a really good library that would have multiple copies of new popular books to a place that I have to request books. Times are tough I tell you(lol).

Our libraries are cutting back too and one of the areas is on audio books. We can borrow and place on hold from any of the libraries in our county (about 12) and what is happening now is one of the libraries is ordering the new ones and holding them for their library only...which means you have to go to that library to see if it is in. You can NOT put them on hold, just have to catch them in. Their online system won't even tell you which library branch they are at! I sometimes will go in to my library and have the gal check to see where the ones are that I want and if they are in.

that would sink me, I always have about 20 books on order from somewhere (through my own library). of course, going around to all the libraries is what got me my nickname, library slut.

I get most of my books from the library for the exact reasons you listed. I read way too much to buy everything I read, so I try to limit my purchases to the keepers and books that I can't get from the library. My biggest problem is that over the past few years, the list of author's who's books I consider keepers are growing. I really need to go through my books and cull out some of the old ones that I know I won't really read again.

Tori I plan on doing that also as soon as I buy my book shelves. I have some that I had felt were keepers but haven't re-read in a while.
