"SEP, Thought of You Immediately"

when I read this article. It's about simplicity. I would love the girls on the bb to read this and tell me if you think you are capable of doing what this woman has done.

Interesting. I sort came to the same philosophy when I was packing up my closet. I found so many pairs of shoes I had never even worn because they were mostly more pretty to look at than practical. I had almost 4 garbage bags of clothes I never wore or hardly wore that didn't fit right. Part of the whole "when I lose weight". Now I only buy clothes that look fantastic on me, if not, I won't buy it.

But there is something got to be said about fashion. Someone once made a comment that art can only be developed and appreciated in a ciilization that has already met their basic needs. Once a civilization is able to sustain their ability to live day to day, they can grow their interests and expand their minds to artistic endeavours (if you've ever read Richard Adams's Watership Down, I'm thinking of the warren of rabbits that lived on the farm). Fashion is another form of art. The way we dress and present ourselves is just another way to show our own personal advancement. I guess the challenge is to be able to express ourselves with only a few choice pieces and not give into the need to own everything you see and touch

That article made me batty! I felt like it didn't tell me much of anything. Was this a series and I missed the others? I couldn't find links to other articles relating to it or anything.
#1 - What was the challenge exactly?
#2 - What did she do to meet the challenge? (What 6 items? How did she decide what to use for the 6 items? What was her allowance on accessories?)
#3 - How long did she do it?
#4 - What is her profession? (I gather it has something to do with being on TV)
Anyone have the answers to this?

Micah

Hey, sorry if this was confusing.

The purpose of this article was simplicity. Jean Chatzky simplified her life by limiting her clothing options. What i find truly fascinating is that she said no one noticed. She changed her look with use of accessories. I am not a fashion person. But this article made alot of sense to me. This woman has all the money in the world to shop herself silly, but she was challenged by this experiment and it changed her perspective, as she states. It saved her time and money. I believe the reason there was no budget limits/requirements, is that you are suppose to shop within your means and that quality is preferable to quantity.

I think I could do this and sort of did it for a little while when I worked at the hospital and had to dress very "office professional". I used to write down in a little book the combinations of skirt, tops, blazer and yes scarves for a week and then rotate them on a different day for the following week. I don't think anyone ever noticed. I never used to wear pants to work either and I used to take the subway.

As Amal posted---I am also guilty of keeping things that I hope to fit into again. I need to purge my closets and stop buying a new top every time I go out.

   I don't think I could do it.
It doesn't mater if "others" would notice, it would be enough that "I"knew!!

And same as Tracy, I felt like there is something missing to the story!

if i had my way, i would wear a freaking uniform. i hate having to pick out clothes esp when i worked. i find it a chore. i am going thur my closet and gonna start tossing like crazy. so much stuff i never wear, take up space, and would be useful for someone else. i totally understand girls who are into fashion, paring down clothing possessions is not desirable. but in these economic tough times, it's something to think about. i'm with amal and hali. this simplicity concept is not limited to clothing btw, even though it was not stated in the article (reading between the lines) living with less is doable and a desirable. honestly, how much "stuff" do you really need? it's burdensome, imo.

As a child with five older brothers and sisters who were either in college or getting married while I was growing up I wore a lot of hand me downs and had a limited shopping budget when I did get new clothes. So, as you can imagine I have done something similar to this most of my life, though not that extreme.
I have a slightly better budget now than I did then, but I still tend to buy good quality classic pieces that can be mixed and matched with only a few trendy pieces (usually shirts) but lots of trendy accesories because the accesories part is dead on right.
The beauty of it is that a good foundation wardrobe can last you years and then you only have to buy a few pieces to update your wardrobe each season.

I started this last spring. I went through my closet and donated anything that I hadn't worn in the last 6 months. (With the exception of a sweater I bought in 1990 and just can't seem to part with. I don't wear it because it's out of style and too big but I like to look at it. Guess I need to frame it.) Almost 1/2 of my closet was bare and everything left fit and looked great.
That worked until Coldwater Creek had a 75% off sale online. You can guess the results.
Bad me.

   I could totally do it.

And it's a really good idea. People have too much stuff - I included. And I think everyone has turned to be way more materialistic than we need to be.

My life was changed when I got the "call" to become a missionary, and I'm also in Ecology right now and learning about how lazy people are (especially Americans, and I am an American) it makes me sick.

There is this guy who became a Freegan and he didn't buy one ounce of food for ten years! A Freegan is a person who "dumpster dives". It sounds extremely gross, but stores are required to throw out their stock when the expiration date comes up, and it doesn't matter if it's still good or not - which it is still good. They are mainly needing more space for more food that they don't really need because they are throwing out good food. So basically, they throw out packaged, non spoiled, products in the garbage. This man goes around before the dump truck gets there and he pulls out all of the good veggies, and loaves of bread and everything.
It makes me want to become a Freegan.

My point here, is that I think if people put thought into their lives and decided not to waste so much money on things they don't need, and started using their brains, life would be better. I think that life now is all about money, status, and laziness....and I'm not saying that I am not one of those people, because most of the time I am.
It really is a shame though. Loved the article Rox!
