Seriously!! I know it's a real illness, and I know that it's probably very difficult for those people to live like that, but I'm horrified for their families who are stuck in that mess. I couldn't do it.
My father has some very real hording tendencies. Up until the past few years since his Alzheimers has made him indifferent to it, every drawer, closet, crawl space and any other empty compartment in my parents house was stuffed to the gills with my dad's junk. Most of it was completely useless to us and he never used it, but he insisted on keeping it. We were able to keep the house clutter free otherwise though thank GOD.

I can't even watch "Hoarders" for more than a minute or so, because it hits too close to home. I grew up in a borderline hoarders home as a child, and it's like a constant weight on your shoulders. I don't think my parents were true hoarders in the clinical sense, but when you combine extreme clutter with extreme laziness, they lived a pretty disgusting life. When I was little, I didn't really know any different, but the older I got, the worse it was. And now that I'm an adult, I'm very clean. Of course I can be messy on occasion, and sometimes let things go for a few days, but it's within normal adult behaviors. I haven't talked to my dad in many years, but I heard through the grapevine that a cleaning lady quit after a week because she was just too disgusted to continue. My skin starts to crawl every time "Hoarders" comes on, and I make my husband change the channel if he has it on. I know that hoarding is a mental illness, but it's a terrible burden for their family members, especially the children.

I think there is a whole generation of people out there that are borderline hoarders. My mom could probably qualify although I know we never had to live like some of the people on the show.

I always contributed it to the fact that she grew up during the Depression. They never threw anything away and always found multiple uses for items. They used and re-used everything!

One suggestion I've heard is to walk through your home once a week with 2 plastic bags. One you fill with stuff to throw away, the other with stuff to give away (to Salvation Army or other donation).

Sounds good to me!! Now I just have to motivate myself to clean as well!!

I recently learned that a former sister-in-law has become agoraphobic and a hoarder. I remember her being outwardly very beautiful and inwardly exceedingly childish and mean. She was a dead ringer for Marie Osmond. Apparently, she is now very large, watches TV all day and orders from QVC, eBay, Amazon.com, etc.

It seems that her behavior never improved and she drover away her son and daughter. All she has left are the things she buy and hoards.

Not to mention tremendous debt.

So sad.

I'm not saying Marie Osmond is childish and mean. Former SIL resembled Marie physically.

i am new to the show, so my feeling was, "well, at least i'm not like that" but after watching a few episodes i am so sadden by this disease. The only thing i can compare it to is a crack addition. Where you are willing to lose everything: your teeth, vanity, even children! because you can't control the hoarding. it's truly heartbreaking. Honestly, i had no idea how bad the disease is. It must be a constant burden for all concerned. Your home should be a haven, not a hell. And from what i've seen so far, it's hell baby. Esp the lady who had 2 dead and decomposed cats in her house and bathroom full of feces. my deepest sympathy for all who have hoarders in the family or have been exposed to it as children (Holli) how terrible and traumatizing.
