"Finland calling... :)"

   Hi, Susan,

and all your friends, too!

I'm an active fan here in Finland - or Funland, as I like to call it.

And now "Newsweek" seems to share my opinion...

Even if we lose to Switzerland , we still have a very good taste here! Just one of your books has been translated to Finnish, but I think you have a solid number of readers here, too. - Finland is a bilingual country, so my sister, for example, has read "Ain't she sweet" in Swedish (our other official language). - Sadly, she wasn't too impressed.

Malin, from Sweden - I do hope you won't feel hurt - but I think that the translation didn't do justice to Susan's work. - Nor did the Finnish translation to "Glitter Baby", at that time.

As a translator I would love to take on the books... But how to translate "cereal killer" to Finnish?! That would be "muro-sarjamurhaaja", I'm afraid! - And to see how anybody makes fun with a word like that, and put it in a context... Well, I would pay good money for it.

In many countries people have obviously done a fantastic job in doing just that - looking at your bookshelves!

My sister is in for good stories, and loves a good romance (mainly she loves crime, but a nice romance is always an option for her).

If she couldn't get that from the translation, well, perhaps the translation wasn't too good. - I had the same feeling when I read "Glitter Baby", in Finnish, the first time around. It was translated to Finnish, in the 80s.

- After I read "Lady Be Good", I've been hooked to your stories!

LBG is my favourite, but "Dream a Little a Dream of Me" - oh, my, I cried, and I often fall back on that book, when life treats me rough.

My sister is very similar to yours, I guess - very much loved, and always on the top of our lists, despite their demenour.

For her "nameday" - we celebrate those over here, in some families (namedays are mainly a Swedish-speaking tradition. Although all families/workplaces etc are included) - I gave my Big Sis a "MMIYC"-copy, and a seasonal "Moomin"-mug (sorry, I don't know how to add a link - a Finnish cartoon- and story-book character, to put it shortly) filled with pralines. - Malin, you know what I'm talking about?!

State-of-the-art entertainment, with a classy romance, a collectible coffee-cup, plus chocolate - how could I go wrong?!

Big Sis was more than happy!!! She's thrilled for a chance to read SEP's work in English.

- I know I must tell you now that my sister had tried to get that book from me, just to read, among many others, she would add, if she could have, and I had stalled...

I just point out: one never knows when one might need a dose of Annabelle's good thinking!

Then again, now Big Sis has a book of her own, and many more to come!

Before signing off: I just want to let all of you know how very pleasant it is to write to a board where people are actually being nice.

Love, Char.

   Hi Char,

Welcome to the board! It is so nice to see another Finnish "face" here. I don't post as often as I once did but I do check the board quite often.

Re: translations - I totally agree with you, some of them don't do justice to the original books. Then again, I may need to re-read my copy of GB to refresh my memory.

   Hi, Crysta,

thank you for your post!

I'm down with a case of bronchitis.

Please give me some time,

I'll write back as soon as I can.

Love, Mia
