"Education please!"

What do you call a person you are living with, but not married to? My dictionary suggests co-habiter or commonlaw spouse, but I'm not sure if those terms are used. I've used the term "partner" when describing my mothers man, but maybe that suggests a homosexual relationship???? Can someone explain this to me, please?

the lawyer in me would say common law spouse or domestic partner, but hey I'm over here in Romania and my grasp of English language and terminology has its days...not sure if today is one of the best, let's wait for the Americans and Australians to enlighten x

I guess I would just introduce him/her without a definition of their relationship. "This is my mother Judy and this is John Doe". If someone asks if they're married, then I guess it's up to you if you want to say they're having a relationship. I don't know if your mother cares if people know they are living together. I always refrain from giving too much information. It's really no one's business.

Over here if you are living with someone and are in a relationship with them but not married, the term is defacto. Defacto spouse, defacto husband/wife, but it isn't as nice as saying partner. I had always preferred the term partner for an adult heterosexual serious or long term relationship, peronally thinking that bf / gf are terms more suited to people under 30, but nowadays the term partner seems to be more associated with same sex partnerships / relationships.

IF they're in their 20's I'd probably just say boyfriend or girlfriend, but if they're older I might say Significant Other. I tend to use partner for same sex relationships also.

I'd say partner or significant other.

I would say partner even for non-homosexual relationships.

Thanks for your answers! I haven't heard the term "significant other" before, but I like it alot. I also like the Australian term defacto spouse.

I would use significant other. A not as polite but to-the-point term I like is live-in.

defacto is more the legal term, it isn't the term people would use in everyday conversation though.

If a designation is needed for purposes of introductions, we tend to use the term partner.

In our country we call it a live-in partner. That is people living together under the same roof but are not married.

I'd call them lucky. lol. Actually Joy Behar of The View calls her 28 year relationship with her man, "My spousal equivalent" which i rather like.

My friends who are in this situation refer to each other as "homey." She'll introduce him "This is Jerry, my homey."
