seeing April's post re. packing for vacation...I hate to pack for vacations...I usualy forget things and the trunk looks like a disaster. I don't know why this cracks me up, but it just does. We lived outside Washington DC for 2 years. Our neighborhood was full of federal employees....one of the hardest working, smartest bunch of people I had ever been around. (Good "aha" for me). Anyway, there was a Navy family down the street and he worked for NASA as a payload specialist. Kathy, his wife, would always have him pack the family for vacations (and they had a very organized garage!) Turns out his job was to pack the Challenger for space flights...everything the astronauts would need from duct tape, tools, toilet paper, tylenol, etc etc....so he had to think of every circumstance they could face, within a very crucial weight limit. That family went on vactaion, never wanted for anything PLUS their car was always neat....still tickles me. |

We had friends whose Dad, Paul, had a schematic for packing their trunk for vacations with each suitcase having a specified location. He also fashioned a holder for the schematic on the inside of the trunk lid. I'm not sure, but I think there was assigned seating in the car. My Dad could get everything in the car in a nice and orderly fashion except for Mom's cosmetic case. Remember those small almost-square-but not-quite make-up cases sold by Samsonite, American Tourister, etc? He complained that those just weren't made to effectively fit after all of the other luggage was put in the car. So he, a Methodist preacher, took to referring to it as "the damn thing." It didn't help that Mom always brought it out after everything else had been packed. Every time. You'd think he would quit being surprised that he had to find a place for it. I asked my friends if their Dad had a place in the trunk for their Mom's cosmetic case. He did. But we never told my Dad. It was more fun to watch him wrestle with it. I usually end up taking way too much stuff. Last year coming home from a visit to mom's house I had a dresser, the boys in their car seats, the luggage, and two little frogs (the kind that stay in water) it was a disaster when going around a corner the frogs and water tipped over and spilled all over AND we had frogs bouncing to and fro. Oh and it was about 95 degrees outside and the boys were very concerned about the frogs well being... oh MY ! Why is it these scenarios always strike when DH is not with me ?
