""Dear John" - a question"

So after reading that Dear John took Avator's place a tthe top of this week's box office list my question is:

This is said to be a tear jerker - does it have a happy ending? I might be tempted to watch it but if one or other dies at the end I don't think i can do that to myself.

I saw the movie the day it came out. I don't want to give too much away, but they changed some things in it...including the ending! It is still the normal NS book, sad with happiness along the way.

Besides changing the ending, I don't think they did enough about John's childhood and his father, but they did include him in.

If you want to know the ending in the movie, email me and I'll tell you, I don't want to post it here.

Still a good movie even though it was not given high ratings (those are the ones we go to see, who rates these movies anyways?)

Thanks Lynda! Just wanted to know whether it has a sad or happy ending. Mind you I watched a Walk to Remember without knowing it was a Nicholas Sparks book and i was shocked when she died at the end. Lol. It was still a very good film though - meaning it wasn't too heavy IMO.

Oh Luci I don't think this one is as 'heavy' as Walk to Remember, but NS can't write a book without some saddness in it. For me it had a happier ending then the book did.

Yes Dawn it is a wonderful tribute to the life of a soldier. I think they made more of it in the movie then in the book.

Lynda I just read an article about the film and book ending on Msn. Apparently the film had an ending similar to the book's till a few weeks before release but some executives felt a more hopeful ending would go down better with audiences. After much pressure the director gave in.

Let me just say that from what i can gather the book would NOT have worked for me.

I liked the way the book ended better....I was going to do a full 'spoiler' here, but decided against it.

Yes the movie version may have given it HEA ending, but to me it changed the meaning of alot of what was set up earlier in the story.

I have to agree Lynda that even though the book ending is more sad I would prefer the film to be totally faithful to the book.

just fyi-matching dollar value to dollar value and not counting in increase in population, gone with the wind is still the box office winner of all time.
that being said, 80% of dear john's audience has been females under the age of 21.
I'm just sayin'.
and I do love nicholas sparks.

with the exception of two guys that were clearly unhappy to be dragged along by their
girlfriends!

i enjoyed the movie. i read the book i while back but i didnt remember much difference (in comparison to the movie, i mean), but ohmylord was i crying! through the whole thing!
except for when i saw channing tatum...was i the only one who thought he looked very attractive? :p (with no shirt on...and in his uniform )

DH and I went the afternoon it opened (the 5:10PM show) and there were only 2 males in the theater...but there were only about a dozen females too! We have this theater near us that just reopened this past summer with 1st run movies. It is an older theater that has opened/closed who knows how many times.

We like it because it is closer to our home and doesn't draw the BIG crowds like the big one does. It has nice seating...with tables between the chairs.

DH enjoyed the movie and after I explained the differences between the book and movie, he said he liked the movie ending better and can understand why it was changed.

The theater i went to was tiny too.. our local theater closed! it was a three minute walk from my home (and it closed for health violations lol-it really wasnt sanitary) but it was so close and so much safer then going to other places. its so much more difficult now, to drive half an hour to a movie.

but im glad they changed the ending too..
i dont think i wouldve been able to take it if they didnt change it..
i would have been sobbing even more. but i thought the acting was excellent.
theyre very good cryers.

Haven't seen it yet, but intend to. Tatum Channing was on "Ellen" today and mentioned that he used to be a stripper than did a short lap dance for her. haha. He's cute. Had never seen him before. Can imagine how hunky he must look in a uniform. HMMM.

AS ALMOST EVERYONE HERE KNOWS MY HEART WAS BROKEN
over DEAR JOHN the book.

It was very hard for me due to the military aspect soo much hit way too close to home.
I went to see the movie tonight and Literally started crying 15 mins in and cried almost the entire time.. UNTIL the ending then I smiled and giggled and did a very happy dance...

FOR ONCE THERE WAS NOT A HORRIFIC ENDING TO A SPARKS MOVIE.. and it was this one they changed....

I was so excited!!!!
