"Work Funny"

I had the funniest thing happen at work yesterday but only people of a certain age will get it. That is so frustrating. Nobody else at work but me and the customer on the phone got it and I was laughing so hard I couldn't talk.
I work at a Farm Equipment Salvage company, we take tractors, balers, etc apart for their used parts and sell them. Farmers can get good used parts for lots less money which is good in this economy.
One these machines is a swather and it cuts hay. It has a part called a conditioner.
My customer called and said he'd checked the day before with the salesman and determined that we did have the particular part he needed. After I answered the phone and he said "Hi", he said, "I just called in to see what condition my conditioner was in".
A few days earlier we'd watched a rerun of the Smothers Brothers show with Kenny Rogers singing What Condition my Condition Was In. I cracked up and after a few really quiet moments on his end, he started laughing really hard too. Then he said, "I now know how old you are if you know that song. Just about as old as I am." The rest of the office was looking at me like I was a bug on a stick. Like I say, they are all too young to have heard the song, so they didn't get it.
It's such a downer when nobody gets the joke but you. Then again, I laughed all day and my DH enjoyed it when I got home.
Now probably nobody on here will know what the heck I'm talking about either because you have to be old and know farm equipment but if you'll just be polite and let me ramble, I'll promise to leave you alone for awhile.

I know too, and you're not alone either. Supposedly, there are a bunch of us boomers around, even if we don't get the headlines these days!

I love that song! I remember it well, so I guess my age is no mystery.

And I write owner's manuals for farming equipment - one of them is a conditioner.

Kenny Rogers is one of my favorites and I'm a former farm girl in more ways than one. I grew up on a farm and my maiden name is Farmer.
No traveling salesman jokes, please.

Okay, I don't get it and I'm not young and I know who Kenny Rogers is and I like his music but don't know the song but i don't know squat about farming equipment! I'll be the first to admit it!! I am glad others on the board were able to identify with you though. I hate it when I'm the only one to get a joke b/c of my age.

Wow, thanks guys. It's fun to know that someone enjoyed the joke. And, I've had the song in my head ever since. Good thing I like the song.

And the name of the group he was in when that song hit the charts? Anyone?

No, Not the New Christie Minstrels. He left that group in '65...'66 something like that and formed The First Edition. "Condition" was their first hit song; 1968.

Yeah, I know a little too much about KR.

As I said, we had just watched the Smothers Brothers DVD and they talked about each show after it was over. Kenny Rogers was really nervous about that song because they had just come from the New Cristie Minstrils, a folk group. He was afraid that the song was too wild and that they should stay with folk music. Then it became a huge rock hit and started his career. That summer the Smothers Brothers needed a summer replacement show so Tommy told Kenny that he would be the replacement show. Kenny was fresh off the farm and didn't know anything about show business, but Tommy just smiled and said, "You'll do okay" and left. Kenny's show was a hit too and he got his own show from that.
I didn't realize how many people the Smothers Brothers made stars out of in their three short years on TV. Tommy was a real genius, comic and otherwise.
