"WAYR: Jan 7th- Jan 14th"

I saw nobody started this thread this week.

I'm still reading "Thirteenth story" by Diane Setterfield. It's not a long book, but I've managed to find enough time to read 20-30 pages a day. But I like the book a lot, but it reminds me a bit of "Shadow of the wind".
Next in line is Jayne Ann Krentz's "Hidden talents". A week ago I've finished her "Eclipse Bay trilogy" and it felt kind of unfinished and undeveloped. I like the characters, but I think they fall in love to soon without any "real" problems.

Well, enough from me.

I wish you ladies a happy reading week

Iva, Zagreb

I sped through the Rough Rider series by Lorelei James, but I stalled with the last book. So, I've decided to give the book club book a read (One Day by David Nichols). I'm trying to get in as many as possible before Call Me Irresistible shows up on my nook.

Here's a free short story to the Rough Riders Series, but wait to read it at the end of the series. Repeat! Read this series in order. Here's the link to the free story:

Dawn, I was wondering if you've read Lori Armstrong, Lorelei James' suspense books under her other pseudonym. I saw she has 2 series going and read good reviews of them, so I might give them a try. Have you tried them?

No, Linou. I haven't tried them, but only because I don't do well with suspenseful books. I have anxiety issues which make suspenseful books just too stressful to read. Otherwise, I would definitely read them, because I love Lorelei. Jenny is a Lorelei fan; I don't know if she's tried the other books or not. You might ask her.

I haven't read her books under Lori Armstrong. I was looking into them but never did get them. Her Rough Riders series is one of my all time favs. I'm also enjoying her new series Blacktop cowboys. Since there is only the first in the series out I will get a better feel for it when the second is released in March.

That's too funny April! Maybe he'll give you a gift card just for erotica. Unfortunately, there's not much as good as Lorelei. I'll have to look in my library and see if I can recommend a couple of titles, all in the interests of a friendlier, happier marriage.

I'm stuck on the last book, but I'll get into it soon. I'm kind of bummed I've reached the end of the series. I haven't read any of the others outside of the Rough Riders. Worth it?

2. "School For Heiresses - Sabrina Jeffries et. al."
In response to message #0

oops! The previous WAYR thread should have ended on June 8th, must have been a slip of hand on my part. Oh well, no harm - no foul, right?

I'm still on my Sabrina Jeffries kick. I am currently reading her School for Heiress's anthology. The book is made up of four short stories by four different writers, Sabrina Jeffries among them, but each story by each writer revolves around a heroine who attends Mrs. Harris's School for Heiresses. I'm already on the third story by Julia London.

I have to say, I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but the story written by SJ is really, really great! I am so in love with the hero (he's half Indian - from India - and half English). She has packed a lot of emotion and angst into this character and the heroine is just so vivacious. I'm already tempted to re-read it again. I'm almost tempted to buy the book, instead of borrowing it from the library, just for this one story.

3. "Eclipse Bay"
In response to message #0

It's interesting - I think a lot of readers who read the Eclipse Bay Trilogy when it was first released loved it, myself included. It's listed as one of my top 10 favourite series, in fact upon a recent re-read, I found that I loved it just as much as I did when I first read it.

However, those who are only discovering the books now, are not as in love with the trilogy as the rest of us are. I think it might just be the fact that the books feel dated. The reason I still love this book now is because it helped shape my idealogies of love and relationships (I was 18 when I first read it) and so much of that idealogy still resonates within me.

But oh well, each their own, right?

Jayne Ann Krentz. It was written back in 2000 or so, but upon my recent re-read, it felt like it was written back in the mid-90's.

5. "Lost Treasure by Kate Sherwood"
In response to message #0

Kate Sherwood is a new find for me. She writes gay romances and is a really good writer.

I'm enjoying this book a lot, but Dark Horses remains my all-time favorite. It's the first book of hers that I read of hers and I got it free. But I loved it so much, I've bought two of her other books. I posted a description of it towards the end of last weeks post, so I'll post it again, in case anyone's interested.

Dan thinks about just driving, leaving the whole mess behind. He's got enough money. He could just arrange to get his stuff and his horse shipped to wherever he's going. Taking off is what he used to do when things got to be too much, and it worked pretty well, really.

Dan Wheeler thought he'd found lasting love and stability with his life and work partner Justin Archer. But when Dan finds himself alone again, still working as a horse trainer for Justin's parents, he has to find a way to accept that his perfect life is gone forever.

Then he meets billionaire Evan Kaminski, who arrives to buy a horse for his younger sister, and Evan's lover Jeff Stevens, a horse trainer who seems to understand more than just Dan's job. Struggling to deal with all the upheaval in his life, Dan finds himself drawn to both Evan's mercurial passion and Jeff's quiet wisdom. Is Dan strong enough to take a chance on new love, or would it be better—safer—for him to be alone?

It's great that I got it free, but I'd pay to read it. Loved the sequel too.

If you liked that, you might enjoy Rinse & Repeat by Amberly Smith. It is her first novel and will be released on the 25th of January. It is a gay romance and I think it is in ebook format.

Bummer, I don't think it's on ebook yet. It's amazing to me how many good gay romances out there. It's opened up a whole new genre. And luckily, I've gotten quite a few of them free.

Just down-loaded 'Yours for the taking' on my new e-reader.

It follows 'Romeo, Romeo', 'Too hot to handle' and 'Breakfast in Bed'. First 2 books were good but the 3rd had one of the most shallow and stupid heroes ever.
But I can't help myself - I have to complete the series...

I feel the same way, Efy. BinB was not good because the hero was so not heroic, imo! But I have downloaded the latest book in the series, and am planning to finish the series. I think Ben will be a better hero...I hope!

Something we disagree on. I didn't love Rich, but I enjoyed reading about him. I found the previous two heros a bit too perfect, which grated on me, so it was really nice to see a hero who was completely oblivious. The whole part about his mother still doing his laundry and Becca telling him that his mother didn't particularly love doing his laundry - it just seemed very real to me. My brother is a complete mama's boy, and he's almost 35 years old and married, and if he could get my mother do his laundry, he would.

Of the three hero's though, my favourite was Mike. I just liked his sincerity. And the whole scene with him taking Annabelle while she was on the phone with Ben was just super hot, lol.

I agree, Amal, about Rich being written realistically. I have one brother and three sisters, and my mom did more for my bro than she ever did for us girls, because, "he's a boy." Sheesh! I remember one time when he was a teenager when I literally dragged him down to the basement and showed him the washing machine and instructed him (with gritted teeth) on how to operate it! And when he got married, my SIL initially did most of the housework...luckily she, and then my bro, got wise

And, surprise, surprise...Mike's my fav, too

The heroine really stood out for me, her messed up relationship with her father, losing her twin brother, finding a new brother - the constant emotional push and shove that she did resonated with me and I loved how Rich as clueless as he was stood by her through it all.

Mikey was my favourite hero. I know this sounds silly, but I loved his relationship with his mother, especially at the end, when she slams the door in his face.

My least favourite was Nick...

I agree with Amal (again!). I loved all three books and thought the author totally nailed Rich.

My only credibility though is that I do agree with Amal, because otherwise I'm totally a Robin Kaye fan girl!

I'm curious to see if B.O.B. makes an appearance in this book...

I also liked Mike the best, too. His was the hottest book.

And I liked cousin Vinnie in the restaurant - giving them advice and teaching them to cook. RK has named this series - the domestic gods.
Vinnie has one of the best quotes to Mike - 'what is it with the Rinaldi women? do thay have wine-flavored nipples?

I'm rereading Romeo, Romeo because my memory is terrible and I couldn't remember the supporting characters and I wanted to do a reread before I read the other books. And also, a perk, is that I got it free on my Kindle. I look forward to the other books. I thought I'd read her next two books, but I don't remember anything about them. So I get to read them like I'm reading them for the first time. Sometimes a terrible memory is a good thing.

What did you all think?

(minor) Spoiler Alert!

It's a marriage of convenience plot with a couple of misunderstandings. I wanted to bang their heads together - which is what the secondary characters are doing by the end of the book.

RK introduced 3 yummy new brothers in the Idaho part of the story...I can see their books on the horizon.

Listening to Intimate by Elizabeth Gage. It's a bit dated but a good story. She has written several books I've enjoyed in the past including A Glimpse of Stocking and Pandora's Box. But these are also older and would be dated for anyone reading them now.

My picky question is: Didn't we used to start this thread on Sundays? This week should say WAYR Jan. 9 - Jan. 15? and last week's was even weirder if I remember correctly, starting on Saturday and ending on Thursday. OK, slap me now for being anal.

No, Becky, you're right. This thread should run from Sunday to Saturday of every week. I messed up last week, by not looking at the dates carefully, which screwed up this week. I prefer to keep the original schedule - so if everyone else is ok with it too, maybe we could continue this thread until the 15th, while starting a new one on the 16th?

Yes... I am going to read her back list soon too. LTASL was awesome. I had reservations because I thought the title was dumb and the cover was annoying, but the book was one the best I've read lately, maybe ever. I'm probably going to download One Reckless Summer next because it's the start of a series.
Thanks for the rec!

16. "Last of Sabrina Jeffries...maybe"
In response to message #0

I finally finished off Sabrina Jeffries School For Heiresses series. I still have one short stories of hers to read before I can officially call it quits.

I woke up early this morning and stayed in bed well into the afternoon to read "Wed Him Before You Bed Him" about Mrs. Charlotte Harris and her "cousin" Michael - I was really shocked to find out who he was, delighted too. I loved that we only got fleeting glimpses of the hero in past books, SJ never really let on much about his character, just let him hang in the periphery. I enjoyed the premise of the story a lot. But the best part about the book is being introduced to all the heros who'll cross over to the Hellions of Halstead series about the Stoneville family! I just clued in that "cousin" Michael's brother is set to hook-up with Stoneville's sister in SJ's next release!

I may just do a re-read of the first two books in the Hellions of Halstead Hall to piece together everything I have learnt so far.

   Hey,

sorry, I didn't see your post earlier. Sabrina Jeffries has her Royal Brotherhood Trilogy, which spins off into her School for Heiresses series, which then spins-off into her Hellions of Halstead Hall series.

I read book 1 of her School for Heiresses series way back when and didn't love it (though I know many others who did). I was never too keen on picking up anything else by SJ, but her Hellions of Halstead Hall really appealed to me. So I picked up my second book by SJ, "The Truth About Lord Stoneville" and enjoyed it. I picked up the second book in this series because it was there and ended up really liking it as well. Again, for whatever reason, I decided to go back and try her School for Heiresses series again, and then I just became hooked!

So as to where to start, I don't know what to say. But I suppose the best place to start would be at the beginning. As I haven't read her Royal Brotherhood series, I can't recommend it yet, so maybe start with her School for Heiresses series. Here are the order for all three series. Keep in mind that book 2 from School for Heiresses is direct continuation of book 2 from the Royal Brotherhood. I was a tad bit confused at first when I read "Only a Duke Will Do", but I think the confusion kept me intrigued.

Royal Brotherhood
1. In the Prince's Bed
2. To Pleasure a Prince
3. One Night with a Prince

School For Heiresses
1. Never Seduce a Scoundrel
2. Only a Duke Will Do
3. Beware a Scot's Revenge
4. Let Sleeping Rogues Lie
5. Don't Bargain with the Devil
6. Wed Him Before You Bed Him

Hellions of Halstead Hall
1. The Truth About Lord Stoneville
2. A Hellion in Her Bed
3. How to Woo a Reluctant Lady

Enjoying it so far but find the futuristic setting (2050?) a little strange and hard to get used to. I also have a Jennifer Crusie book called Bet Me; this will be my first by this author.

It's a very reader friendly future- no world building required, which is the reason I don't like much futuristic fiction. World building is where the author spends more time telling you about the future world than about the plot or the characters. JD Robb just throws in a few details as part of the story and soon you can see their NYC as you read. Essential to read the first few in order tho for the development of Eve and Roarke's relationship. I love the button in his pocket.

Stick with the Eve Dallas series, you'll get used to the futuristic setting. The romance between Eve and Roark is great, and the character development as the series goes on is wonderful. These are characters with a lot of layers.

Jennifer Crusie writes good romances with a lot of humor. I would think anyone who likes SEP would like J.C.

I have to add another "Please stick with" the "In Death" series. By the time you get to the 3rd book you will be absolutely hooked. She now has 30+ in the series, so you will have lots of happy reading in front of you.

I don't usually like futuristic or sci fi settings, but this world isn't too different from our current world. It is very interesting to see how Nora has changed the world Eve and Roarke live in in 2058.

A lot of the changes are very subtle, but interesting and fun.

I liked Bet Me a lot too. I always want to go make Chicken Marsala when I think about that book.

After several rave reviews (I can't remember if it was on here or Goodreads) I checked out the only book by this author that my library carried. It's really good, if a little dated feeling (It first came out in 2000, but I'm liking it a lot.

After this I'm going to do a few quick rereads in preparation for the release of CMI! Woohoo!

I've had this downloaded for awhile and decided to start it since we are getting more snow. I didn't realize it was another Christmas anthology of four romances related to Christmas. I read two anthologies of Christmas novellas in December but decided to go ahead and read this one now rather than hold on to it until next December.

I've finished the RC I was reading and have the next one on my Kindle but didn't want to start it as I know when I get CMI in my hands I'll stop reading it and go right to CMI.

So I am trying to find some short reads till then. I picked up the new release of Catherine Anderson's Sun Kissed which I have read before but in the back is her short story from The Ture Love Wedding Dress, Beautiful Gifts and then an excerpt from her new book coming out later this month Here To Stay. I'm done with those now looking for something to keep me happy till CMI.

Me too! I haven't wanted to setlle on anything too long because I know once CMI hits my kindle Tuesday, I'll have to stop reading whatever I had and pick that up! So I've been reading short stories and just updating my wish list on Amazon. Once I'm done with CMI I'll find something else!

I started this today, so I'm not too far along. I'm liking it a lot more than the first book, maybe because I'm in the right mood to read about friendship and work. I do love how the hero from the first book keeps blushing and turning red - very cute and I'm loving the banter between the girls. I love how they dish on everything and how neighbourly they all are. I've always wanted to have friendships exactly like theirs. BFF's who live together, work together, share together...no wonder they call it fiction, lol

I'm reading Scoundrel by Elizabeth Elliot. It's my first by her and it was one of the top 100 on the 2004 AAR poll.

It's very good so far! Does she have others that you've read and liked?

Do re mi fa sol long,

I've never tried this author before, and I'm starting with her FBI romantic suspense series. The first book is called The Cove, and it is just OK so far.
