"WAYR the week of March 1-6"

I can't believe no one has started this thread yet!! It's my first time starting this one

I just completed a reread of BET ME by Jenny Crusie...love, love, love this book! Cal & Min and the whole lot of them are just fabulous.

I am really looking forward to my Kindle delivery of the new Robyn Carr Book, MOONLIGHT ROAD, and THE SUMMER HIDEAWAY, by Susan Wiggs (another Lakeshore book!) and THE NAKED EDGE by Pamela Clare. These three will make it very difficult for me to get any work done this week!!

What are y'all reading this week?

Last night I finished The Next Best Thing by Kristan Higgins and was blown away by the story and writing. Due to all the emotional upheaval, this book was outside of my comfort zone. But it was just so well done, that I think I'm going to buy it for my Kindle.

I just started Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis. I hope to be reading Robyn Carr's new book soon too. I pre-ordered it for my Kindle.

I have been listening to One for the Money and Two for the Dough. I thought it was time to get into the Stephanie Plum books. I have listened to many of her other books and liked them, but a series with 16 books seemed a little daunting. I failed with Suzanne Brockmann to finish her series. I still want to read or listen to them though. One day I will get back to that. I have also been reading Heidi Betts Tangled in Love and Love Me Loves Me Knot. Love Me Love Me KNot may not exactly be politiaclly correct. Yesterday, I went to the library and picked up 5 books for 50 cents a piece that were fairly recently released. I put them and the books that I was getting for my son and classroom on a self and the librarian put them back before I could finish finding everything that I needed. Now that the library has gone totally automatic check-out, the librarian have time to discomfiture people who just want to put their books down for a second or longer. I had a lot to find. In my defense, my left arm is still injured. The librarian from the children section did try to help me locate everything again. This is just some of the traumas of using an automated library. The poor librarian also hoover over you during check-out and while you're looking. I think that they feel displaced and lost their sense of purpose. I could just be projecting though. They also are not allowed to give change now. I now owe the library for two of the books that I wanted, since I did not have enough exact change. They told me everyone is on the honor system now. This could really cut into their donation fund. You know not everyone is that honest. Me, I went to Catholic school the guilt alone will make me do it.

I listened to Mother of the Bride by Lynn Michaels. Love it! Great romance with lots of good love scenes and also very funny in parts, almost slapstick funny. Great entertainment.

I also listened to 7th Heaven and am now listening to The 8th Confession by James Patterson, the most recent two books in the Women's Murder Club series.

I'm trying to read three books at once, which isn't my usual style.

I've savoring S Enoch's "Stolen Kisses" that Luci was so sweet to send to me. Since there won't be another SE book for a while, I read just so much a night to make it last. It's a treasure. Thanks, Luce.

I'm also halfway through Craig Ferguson's autobiography "American on Purpose" --in the part during his "deep end" alcholic period. He's one terrific writer, honest and not at all self-serving.

Finally, I started "Ensemble, C'est Tout," suggested by Linou. When I'm thinking in English and translating French words it goes so much more slowly than when I can slip into reading en francais. I'm taking my time though because there are so many common words in french and english that look the same but have different shades of meaning or mean something else altogther because of idiomatic expressions. It's fun and I'm loving the book, even though this 500-page book will take me quite a while to read, no doubt.

Amal, I had to achieve a compentency in French for my English degree, but I sadly haven't kept at it over the years, so now I'm trying to bring it back up to snuff. I also hope to learn German and Italian along the way--a long term goal, obviously--but since I rarely watch TV this should be doable eventually I think.

Linda, I'm glad you're enjoying Ensemble, C'est Tout ! And if any other Seppies wants to try this book, it was translated into English (Hunting and Gathering) and into German (Zusammen ist man weniger allein). It's a wonderful book, give it a try ! So up-lifting and heart-warming.

I'm almost at the end of this book, just have a few more chapters to go. So far, I'm really liking it. Surprisingly, I think I'm enjoying it more because I've been reading it in bits and pieces. There's enough action to keep me interested, but had I read it one sit-down period, I don't think I would have loved it as much as I am.

One of my favourite things about Connie Brockway is that she knows how to deliver the most cheesiest, most romantic lines ever. She knows how to make a woman swoon with her hero's wonderful romantic speeches. I just came to the part where the hero declares his affections in a letter - and just WOW!

Not sure what I'll pick up next.

- Amal

   Hey Luci,

Not sure if you saw my post on last week's WAYR Thread, but since you just read So Enchanting, your first Brockway book, I thought I'd recommend her Rose Hunter Series. There’s a lot of suspense, heat, and anticipation, with some of the best romantic speeches I’ve ever read. It helps to read them in order, starting with: My Seduction; My Pleasure, My Surrender

If you’re looking for an easy, slow read that delivers all your secret romantic overtures, read “Dear Enemy”. The end of the book really blew me away with the hero’s poetic words.

   Hey Amal,

thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't seen your previous post. I must be sincere I was not so impressed by So Enchanting BUT i think its due to my mood at the moment. Because essentially i think her writing is very good. I must not be in the right mood for the book. Will try the series you suggested though. thanks.

Looks like the reading Slump is over. I picked up 6 books last week and even though I've been busy with work I managed to read 3 of them. All very good I must say.

I just finished Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr today and just loved it. Now what is the scoop RC fans? Will she have 3 more next year and who will the books be about? Love the Riordans and would like to see more but who else?

I also read Tempt Me If You Can by Janet Chapman. This is a sequel to The Man Must Marry which I just adore. Tempt me is truly a great book and if you haven't read this author yet I defnitely recommend.

I also read Start Me Up by Victoria Dahl. She is a new author to me and I'm reading out of order--I have already read Lead Me On and now I have to read the first book.

Happy reading week everyone.

Tell me about it, Luci!!! I am soooo tempted to start reading Moonlight Road,or The Summer Hideaway, or the Naked Edge, but I am really behind on my work deadline and know if I start any of them I will not want to stop reading---I'll tell myself I'll just read a small amount, as a break/reward for completing some work, and next thing I know a few hours have passed. Or, I'll start reading tonight and stay up way too late, and be wrecked for the next few days!

Yet, there the books sits, on my Kindle, beckoning me.....argh!!!!

I have the same problem Lisa. I promised myself that I would take The Shadow and The Wind away with me this week so I don't want to start Naked Edge or Moonlight Road because then i would not be able to put it down for five days.

Instead I am doing a re-read of Julia Quinn's When He Was Wicked.

We must be soul sister in our reading habits, Luci

And, I don't know what exactly I've done to be tormented so---it was bad enough yesterday when I was teased by a rave review of Julie James' newest book at the "Smart Bitches, Trashy Books" website, but today when I visited the SBTB website that had another rave review of a book I'm dying to read....The Naked Edge by Pamela Clare!!!

Read Everything and the Moon by Julia Quinn - loved the beginning but it fizzled out for me when he abducted her (forgot theirs names already!). I have discovered a new pet peeve - cannot stand when the hero abducts the heroine.

Am reading Connie Brockway's So Enchanting - my first book by her. I think she has an excellent writing style but my reading mood is not tops.

I read Wild Heat, it was okay. I had a few problems early on and it kept me from really getting into the story. I never warmed up to the heroine and BA sure likes her hyperboles. But the hero was a nice one, it was my first arsonist bad guy and the story was fast-paced so I kept reading (if I'm bored or don't like the story, I usually stop reading).

This is the only SEP book I haven't read and the local bookstores don't have it, so to get it I have to order from Amazon or something. However I just got a new phone and I downloaded an ebook app and it was on there, so I started reading it. So far I like it, but I'm not very far into it. Sadly my app doesn't tell you the page number you're on, it only tells you how many pages are in the book, that's really annoying.

I'm also still working on a Lisa Kleypas book. For some reason I just can't get into it, so I've been reading a page here and there, but I haven't sat down to just read it so this one will stay unread until I can get back in the mood for a historical.

LOL, Luci! Here's a surprise: I used to always to say DALD was my favorite book!! that is, until I got a little fickle and started alternating it with Fancy Pants or Kiss an Angel every so often. It depends on my mood which one I'll say is my favorite on any one day.

I read (yet) another poll for book of the decade and DALD was on it!

Linda, I enjoyed KAA a real lot but when I read DALD I was touched in a particular way, can't really say why but it is probably related to gabe's internal turmoil. Now Fancy PAnts - I am sorry to say - I did not read. Its just that I hadn't realised it came before Lady Be Goo (which I also love BTW), and when i realised it was more of a women's fiction book then straight romance I was not so tempted to read it. i have it at home mind you. I just need the final push to pick it up.

You've got time before Ted's book comes out - and you will need insight into his mother with this book. Trust me it's great.

Luci, if DALD is your favorite, trust me that you'll like Fancy Pants too. I don't remember it so much as being a Parts book as a book that just takes place over several years instead of a shorter time period, which also gives more time for character development.

Do you know if you have an older version or a newer one? The older version I have starts out with quite a bit about Francie's mom, until it gets to Francie and Dallie together. The newer version leaves that out, I think. Anyway, it's when Francie meets Dallie that I really got hooked. And both characters have problem backgrounds, as Gabe and Rachel had sorrowful backstories.

Several of the scenes toward the end of Fancy Pants are my all-time favorites romance scenes. SEP just knocks them right out of the park. JMO

I believe its the newer version that I have Linda. I had a couple of copies of the olfder version but i sold those (did some SEP book pimping ) Well I definitely prefer it if the book concentrates more on Francesca and Dallie (i think that's his name right? The problem i had with Glitter Baby - and i mean in no way to say anything against the book, this is just a problem I have not the author - but GB had too much of the mum in it and I wanted to get straight to the heroine.

It's probably sacrilege to say this, but I think you could skim the first part of Fancy Pants. But when she gets to the States you have to pay attention. The whole Francesca/Dallie/Teddy thing will give you a perspective on Ted that I think you will want to have.

   Nooooooooooooo - don't skip it.
You have to see the spoilt brat Francie is at the start, to witness her despair and how she picks herself up. The second half of the book is her as a successful single mom where she collides with Dallie again as a mature woman.
I agree with Linda, there are some great scenes - I love where she taunts him at every hole during a golf tournament. Man, the tension!

C'mon Lucy - you won't regret it. Just imagine this strong woman as mother-in-law to Ted's wife...fireworks!

Lucy, since you said you have the revised version (meaning Francesca's mom has already been cut out) you won't have to make any decisions on what to, or what not to read.

The revised version was issued in 2005 as a trade paperback. If you have a massmarket copy, I think it likely will have more about F and her mom.

I didn't realize that FP was re-released with an edited version? I'm not sure which version I read then...

Luci - This book is a MUST-READ! It starts off a bit on the slow side, but as Linda said, it shows you how spoilt Francie really is, her background and the choices she makes as a parent. But once she gets to the US - then watch-out! It's definite romance for me, not so much women's fiction. Not like Glitter Baby or even Ain't She Sweet.

Of all of SEP's books, I think this made me cry the most. Teddy is too well-adjusted in LBG, but in FP, he gives Dallie a real run for his money. Can't wait to see that same angst translate into his own story

Let us know when you get to it!

- Amal

It's slow-moving for me, but I'm getting towards the conclusion so it's going a bit faster now. The mystery is stumping me and that usually doesn't bother me, but it is this time. I just want to know who did it! Plus, I like the more action-packed, high-body-count books. So, this one isn't written to my personal preferences. Still, can't go wrong with Eve, Roarke and their teams.

Just finished Fantasy in Death and I think it is one of her best. I listen to the In Death books now and this one had LOL-at-the-gym moments. I agree with you April that this one is less about the action and the body count. It's more focused on character growth. We see a lot of Dallas' POV.

Lynda, if you are on Breath of Snow and Ashes, you are almost at the end. I loved Echo in the Bone. It is more mature. It isn't a secret that it is about mortality. But there's no need for you to rush since DG usually has about 5 years between books.

   Steph,
I can't agree more about the Diana Gabaldon audio books. I think Davina Porter has to be one of the most talented readers there is. My throat almost hurts for her after Jamie has a long speech because she can sound just like a man.

Do you also listen to the In Death books? Lizzie got me hooked and Susan Ericksen is very talented. To quote you, she makes the characters come alive. I'm still also buying the hardcover so that I can share them with my mother. The three authors I get in multiple formats (hardcover, audio, and sometimes also Kindle) are DG, JD Robb, and SEP.

Patricia,
I haven't listened or read any of the In Death books but I have some credits on Audible so that sounds like the next place to start. I love listening to a good series with a great reader. Do you think I need to read the books first or can I go straight to listening?

   Steph,
Please do read or listen in order. I re-listen to the first three again and again. I don't think I have read the last two books at all, just went straight to listening. But everyone takes in info differently, so if you are more visual than auditory, reading first might work better for you.

I just turned two of my cousins on to these books and am waiting to hear what they think. Lot's of folks find Eve Dallas, the heroine, too rough. The wonder of these books is the character development that occurs over the time frame of the series. In other words, hang in there.

No, I like Eve a lot. After Fantasy in Death, which I still need to listen to again, I'm hoping she doesn't loose her edginess.

BTW, I sort of share my mother's fears that I might pick up too much of Eve's vocabulary IRL.

I do enjoy seeing Eve and her parallel between her friends and the friends at U-Play, but it's not clicking with me. I still like it though. I mean, it's rare there's a bad In Death book. Plus, even if I don't love it, there's another book in a couple of months to look forward to.

I'm doing a reread of the first three in the Desperate Duchess series so I can do a real read of the final three.

I really enjoy EJ's books but sometimes I feel like they're above me and I feel a little lost. Does anyone else have this?

Do you mean like you sometimes have to read a paragraph three times to get it? It happens to me - I am not sure if its with Eloisa James but it does happen to me. I have a very short memory but I believe i have this problem with Meredith Duran's books.

JMO but I think there are layers to her stories (or maybe literary references and echoes would be the way to say it?). And I sometimes wonder if I'm getting all of the richness that is there.

I think her stories work on several levels (in the same way Shakespeare wrote for both the cheap seats and the box seats), so while I always really enjoy her books, I too wonder if I've missed a reference or clever joke sometimes. (But that's on me, not her.)

The Essex Sisters series felt like Shakespearean comedies to me, what with all the misunderstandings, miscues, misdirections, etc., but I couldn't tell you which plays or characters.

And at sometime in the middle of reading the Desparate Duchess series, I thought EJ was using John Milton's Paradise Lost metaphorically for her dukes, with Beaumont in the role of the Good, and Villiers as the fallen angel (which in turn alludes to the contradictions in Milton's characters too). By the end of the Villiers book, she sewed it up for me with some key words, and even in the epilogue.

I always feel if I go back to re-read EJ's books, maybe I'll see a layer or reference I may have missed before--which is fun, and a plus, I think. Is this the kind of thing you're referring to?

Exactly Linda! I am more of a literal thinker and have always had a hard time recognizing symbolism. I thought Jonathan Livingston Seagull was about a bird! Give me an algebra problem or a musical score and I'm a wonder!

I read EJ and know that she's making a wonderfully compelling and witty references and I don't get it!

Ypu summed it up beautifully...I may have to read the Cliffs Notes of Paradise Lost before I continue with this series!

Lynne, I don't think you need to bone up on Paradise Lost to enjoy EJ's dukes--of course, unless you just want to. I read PL many years ago but the thing that struck me about Beaumont and Villiers is the set up of the roles in PL and the contradictions.

If it would help and you would like me to, I could email you just the important references to PL to the two dukes, which won't spoil the last books at all. It's another way to look at the dukes--not what they will do. Just let me know if I should tell you, or if you truly want to read cliff notes.

You know what I want? Cliff notes for EJ books so I don't miss anything!

And BTW, Lynne, I still plan to send the SJ books. Just be patient with me, ok? I also found an older book for you, so you'll have one for contrast.

I read Sizzle a few weeks ago and just loved it. The book previous to this I wasn't so crazy about but loved the characters in this one.
Now I think JG needs to give Sydney Buchanan her own story.

A strange mix right? I know.

I love Sandra Brown's suspense novels, but I just finished her Texas Triology last night (romance) and loved all three stories. Thoroughly enjoyable!

At a local charity used book sale last week I picked up five of Julie Garwood's books and can't wait to get started. I've only read one of her books to date - The Wedding - and I absolutely loved it! I'm starting "For The Roses" this morning.

Man oh man, is it a good week for reading! In addition to the new books by Robyn Carr, Susan Wiggs, Pamela Clare that are sitting on my Kindle, taunting me while I am behind on my work deadline, this morning I received the Julie James' new book, SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. To make matters worse, I read the stellar review the book received from "Smart Bitches, Trashy Books".

Just finished 'Thief of Hearts' - really good. Apart from a heroine that dithers a little too much for my liking. I just had to share a paragraph with you - it's like poetry.

"The sea at dawn is a cathedral, Lucy." Her breath caught at the unexpected music of her name on his lips.
"It's where darkness is conquered by light in a battle that's been waging for all eternity. To watch the sun weave that first gleaming thread on the horizon is an invitation to worship, a call to fall on your knees, renounce your cynicism, and embrace the belief that a world as corrupt as ours can be washed clean with nothing more than the spill of waves against the sand."
Lucy couldn't breathe. She'd long ago resigned herself to being unworthy of love, but the aching knot had moved to her throat - a knot of yearning tainted by agonizing jealousy of something a man could adore so much. She had hoped Claremont's company might ease her loneliness, but instead he had sharpened it, made it's edges more jagged.

*sigh*

Lizzie turned me on to this book from my Cowboy Eye Candy post. I chose to read this book because it got good reviews and the heroine is a library. Since I worked so much in libraries, I like reading books where the heroine is a librarian.

I just started my first JS book, Slow Heat. I'm in the mood for a sports-related book and I couldn't find Double Pay yet, so...I'm doing the unforgiveable, reading out of order.

I finished Fantasy in Death and enjoyed it. I thought it was a nice "changeup" (to use a baseball term) from other books. JDR just never gets in a rut and it's 30 books and counting. What an amazing achievement.

I'm reading my first Kristin Higgins book, Just One of the Guys, and am truly enjoying it!

As I mentioned in another post, I generally don't like first person narratives in a romance novel, but I'm loving this one. I think by not getting the hero's POV, it just builds the anticipation level - does he or doesn't he care for the heroine.

What impresses me the most is how real the heroine is. She's not goofy, or enchanting, she doesn't have all of the answers, she's not the smartest person in the book. She's not hung up over herself. She has insecurities, but she also has a lot of strength. She processes events in her life like a normal person would in the real world. I don't find her overly fictionalized - does that make sense? She's not afraid to be who she is or compromise herself or put herself out there. Really great read!

- Amal
