"WAYR the week of March 1-6"
| |
I can't believe no one has started this thread yet!! It's my first time starting this one I just completed a reread of BET ME by Jenny Crusie...love, love, love this book! Cal & Min and the whole lot of them are just fabulous. I am really looking forward to my Kindle delivery of the new Robyn Carr Book, MOONLIGHT ROAD, and THE SUMMER HIDEAWAY, by Susan Wiggs (another Lakeshore book!) and THE NAKED EDGE by Pamela Clare. These three will make it very difficult for me to get any work done this week!! What are y'all reading this week? LisaA in Washington state |

Last night I finished The Next Best Thing by Kristan Higgins and was blown away by the story and writing. Due to all the emotional upheaval, this book was outside of my comfort zone. But it was just so well done, that I think I'm going to buy it for my Kindle. I just started Slow Heat by Jill Shalvis. I hope to be reading Robyn Carr's new book soon too. I pre-ordered it for my Kindle. Dawn "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read." --Groucho Marx |

I'm trying to read three books at once, which isn't my usual style. I've savoring S Enoch's "Stolen Kisses" that Luci was so sweet to send to me. Since there won't be another SE book for a while, I read just so much a night to make it last. It's a treasure. Thanks, Luce. I'm also halfway through Craig Ferguson's autobiography "American on Purpose" --in the part during his "deep end" alcholic period. He's one terrific writer, honest and not at all self-serving. Finally, I started "Ensemble, C'est Tout," suggested by Linou. When I'm thinking in English and translating French words it goes so much more slowly than when I can slip into reading en francais. I'm taking my time though because there are so many common words in french and english that look the same but have different shades of meaning or mean something else altogther because of idiomatic expressions. It's fun and I'm loving the book, even though this 500-page book will take me quite a while to read, no doubt. |

I'm almost at the end of this book, just have a few more chapters to go. So far, I'm really liking it. Surprisingly, I think I'm enjoying it more because I've been reading it in bits and pieces. There's enough action to keep me interested, but had I read it one sit-down period, I don't think I would have loved it as much as I am. One of my favourite things about Connie Brockway is that she knows how to deliver the most cheesiest, most romantic lines ever. She knows how to make a woman swoon with her hero's wonderful romantic speeches. I just came to the part where the hero declares his affections in a letter - and just WOW! Not sure what I'll pick up next. - Amal |

Hey Luci, Not sure if you saw my post on last week's WAYR Thread, but since you just read So Enchanting, your first Brockway book, I thought I'd recommend her Rose Hunter Series. There’s a lot of suspense, heat, and anticipation, with some of the best romantic speeches I’ve ever read. It helps to read them in order, starting with: My Seduction; My Pleasure, My Surrender If you’re looking for an easy, slow read that delivers all your secret romantic overtures, read “Dear Enemy”. The end of the book really blew me away with the hero’s poetic words. - Amal |

Looks like the reading Slump is over. I picked up 6 books last week and even though I've been busy with work I managed to read 3 of them. All very good I must say. I just finished Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr today and just loved it. Now what is the scoop RC fans? Will she have 3 more next year and who will the books be about? Love the Riordans and would like to see more but who else? I also read Tempt Me If You Can by Janet Chapman. This is a sequel to The Man Must Marry which I just adore. Tempt me is truly a great book and if you haven't read this author yet I defnitely recommend. I also read Start Me Up by Victoria Dahl. She is a new author to me and I'm reading out of order--I have already read Lead Me On and now I have to read the first book. Happy reading week everyone. Tell me about it, Luci!!! I am soooo tempted to start reading Moonlight Road,or The Summer Hideaway, or the Naked Edge, but I am really behind on my work deadline and know if I start any of them I will not want to stop reading---I'll tell myself I'll just read a small amount, as a break/reward for completing some work, and next thing I know a few hours have passed. Or, I'll start reading tonight and stay up way too late, and be wrecked for the next few days! Yet, there the books sits, on my Kindle, beckoning me.....argh!!!! LisaA in Washington state |

This is the only SEP book I haven't read and the local bookstores don't have it, so to get it I have to order from Amazon or something. However I just got a new phone and I downloaded an ebook app and it was on there, so I started reading it. So far I like it, but I'm not very far into it. Sadly my app doesn't tell you the page number you're on, it only tells you how many pages are in the book, that's really annoying. I'm also still working on a Lisa Kleypas book. For some reason I just can't get into it, so I've been reading a page here and there, but I haven't sat down to just read it so this one will stay unread until I can get back in the mood for a historical. LOL, Luci! Here's a surprise: I used to always to say DALD was my favorite book!! that is, until I got a little fickle and started alternating it with Fancy Pants or Kiss an Angel every so often. It depends on my mood which one I'll say is my favorite on any one day. I read (yet) another poll for book of the decade and DALD was on it! |

Luci, if DALD is your favorite, trust me that you'll like Fancy Pants too. I don't remember it so much as being a Parts book as a book that just takes place over several years instead of a shorter time period, which also gives more time for character development. Do you know if you have an older version or a newer one? The older version I have starts out with quite a bit about Francie's mom, until it gets to Francie and Dallie together. The newer version leaves that out, I think. Anyway, it's when Francie meets Dallie that I really got hooked. And both characters have problem backgrounds, as Gabe and Rachel had sorrowful backstories. Several of the scenes toward the end of Fancy Pants are my all-time favorites romance scenes. SEP just knocks them right out of the park. JMO |

Lucy, since you said you have the revised version (meaning Francesca's mom has already been cut out) you won't have to make any decisions on what to, or what not to read. The revised version was issued in 2005 as a trade paperback. If you have a massmarket copy, I think it likely will have more about F and her mom. |

I didn't realize that FP was re-released with an edited version? I'm not sure which version I read then... Luci - This book is a MUST-READ! It starts off a bit on the slow side, but as Linda said, it shows you how spoilt Francie really is, her background and the choices she makes as a parent. But once she gets to the US - then watch-out! It's definite romance for me, not so much women's fiction. Not like Glitter Baby or even Ain't She Sweet.
Of all of SEP's books, I think this made me cry the most. Teddy is too well-adjusted in LBG, but in FP, he gives Dallie a real run for his money. Can't wait to see that same angst translate into his own story Let us know when you get to it! - Amal |

I'm doing a reread of the first three in the Desperate Duchess series so I can do a real read of the final three. I really enjoy EJ's books but sometimes I feel like they're above me and I feel a little lost. Does anyone else have this?

JMO but I think there are layers to her stories (or maybe literary references and echoes would be the way to say it?). And I sometimes wonder if I'm getting all of the richness that is there. I think her stories work on several levels (in the same way Shakespeare wrote for both the cheap seats and the box seats), so while I always really enjoy her books, I too wonder if I've missed a reference or clever joke sometimes. (But that's on me, not her.) The Essex Sisters series felt like Shakespearean comedies to me, what with all the misunderstandings, miscues, misdirections, etc., but I couldn't tell you which plays or characters. And at sometime in the middle of reading the Desparate Duchess series, I thought EJ was using John Milton's Paradise Lost metaphorically for her dukes, with Beaumont in the role of the Good, and Villiers as the fallen angel (which in turn alludes to the contradictions in Milton's characters too). By the end of the Villiers book, she sewed it up for me with some key words, and even in the epilogue. I always feel if I go back to re-read EJ's books, maybe I'll see a layer or reference I may have missed before--which is fun, and a plus, I think. Is this the kind of thing you're referring to? |

Exactly Linda! I am more of a literal thinker and have always had a hard time recognizing symbolism. I thought Jonathan Livingston Seagull was about a bird! Give me an algebra problem or a musical score and I'm a wonder! I read EJ and know that she's making a wonderfully compelling and witty references and I don't get it! Ypu summed it up beautifully...I may have to read the Cliffs Notes of Paradise Lost before I continue with this series!

Lynne, I don't think you need to bone up on Paradise Lost to enjoy EJ's dukes--of course, unless you just want to. I read PL many years ago but the thing that struck me about Beaumont and Villiers is the set up of the roles in PL and the contradictions. If it would help and you would like me to, I could email you just the important references to PL to the two dukes, which won't spoil the last books at all. It's another way to look at the dukes--not what they will do. Just let me know if I should tell you, or if you truly want to read cliff notes. You know what I want? Cliff notes for EJ books so I don't miss anything! And BTW, Lynne, I still plan to send the SJ books. Just be patient with me, ok? I also found an older book for you, so you'll have one for contrast. |

A strange mix right? I know. I love Sandra Brown's suspense novels, but I just finished her Texas Triology last night (romance) and loved all three stories. Thoroughly enjoyable! At a local charity used book sale last week I picked up five of Julie Garwood's books and can't wait to get started. I've only read one of her books to date - The Wedding - and I absolutely loved it! I'm starting "For The Roses" this morning. Gina - Colorado |

Just finished 'Thief of Hearts' - really good. Apart from a heroine that dithers a little too much for my liking. I just had to share a paragraph with you - it's like poetry. "The sea at dawn is a cathedral, Lucy." Her breath caught at the unexpected music of her name on his lips. "It's where darkness is conquered by light in a battle that's been waging for all eternity. To watch the sun weave that first gleaming thread on the horizon is an invitation to worship, a call to fall on your knees, renounce your cynicism, and embrace the belief that a world as corrupt as ours can be washed clean with nothing more than the spill of waves against the sand." Lucy couldn't breathe. She'd long ago resigned herself to being unworthy of love, but the aching knot had moved to her throat - a knot of yearning tainted by agonizing jealousy of something a man could adore so much. She had hoped Claremont's company might ease her loneliness, but instead he had sharpened it, made it's edges more jagged. *sigh* Efy (Sydney) PS. computer working again, so I can access Kinsale's Lessons in French - bit of an info-dump in first few chapters so far... |

I just started my first JS book, Slow Heat. I'm in the mood for a sports-related book and I couldn't find Double Pay yet, so...I'm doing the unforgiveable, reading out of order. I finished Fantasy in Death and enjoyed it. I thought it was a nice "changeup" (to use a baseball term) from other books. JDR just never gets in a rut and it's 30 books and counting. What an amazing achievement. |

I'm reading my first Kristin Higgins book, Just One of the Guys, and am truly enjoying it! As I mentioned in another post, I generally don't like first person narratives in a romance novel, but I'm loving this one. I think by not getting the hero's POV, it just builds the anticipation level - does he or doesn't he care for the heroine. What impresses me the most is how real the heroine is. She's not goofy, or enchanting, she doesn't have all of the answers, she's not the smartest person in the book. She's not hung up over herself. She has insecurities, but she also has a lot of strength. She processes events in her life like a normal person would in the real world. I don't find her overly fictionalized - does that make sense? She's not afraid to be who she is or compromise herself or put herself out there. Really great read! - Amal |
